Landslides triggered by incessant rainfall have caused major disruptions on the Mid-Hill Highway, affecting travel and tourism in the region. The highway is blocked at multiple points, including Khadukhola, Jirikhola, and Kalapairakhola within Nisikhola and Badigad Rural Municipalities of Baglung district. The Burtibang-East Rukum and Baglung-Burtibang sections are completely closed, according to Tikanidhi Paudel, the Ward President of Nisikhola-4.
The roadblocks have left many tourists and locals stranded, including those traveling to popular destinations such as Nisikhola, East Rukum, Jajarkot, Rolpa, Pokhara, and Kathmandu. Many of the stranded travelers were returning to their villages to celebrate the upcoming Teej festival, a major cultural event in Nepal.
Night passenger buses from Kathmandu to East Rukum and Jajarkot have been halted at Burtibang, exacerbating the situation. Ward President Paudel mentioned that clearing the highway could take time as heavy rains continue, making it difficult for authorities to respond swiftly.
This disruption highlights the ongoing challenges of maintaining infrastructure in Nepal’s hilly regions, especially during the monsoon season. For tourists planning to visit destinations along the Mid-Hill Highway, delays are expected, and alternative travel plans may be necessary.
These landslides not only affect local travel but also impact the flow of tourists to the scenic and culturally rich areas along the Mid-Hill Highway. Tour operators and visitors are advised to stay updated on road conditions and consider alternative routes.
