Lawmakers Urge Government To Develop Far-West As A Religious Tourism Hub

Lawmakers in the National Assembly have called on the government to promote Far-Western Nepal as a religious tourism destination. During today’s session under “Regional Concerns,” Nepali Congress MP Narayan Dutta Bhatt stressed the region’s rich potential and urged the government, through the Chair, to invest in tourism promotion and infrastructure development.

He highlighted that Far-Western Nepal, home to sacred sites like Malika, Khaptad, Tripura Sundari, and Shaileshwari, has high potential for religious tourism. However, he expressed concern that despite discussions, practical implementation remains lacking, particularly due to poor infrastructure and accommodation facilities in areas like Khaptad and Badimalika.

MP Bhatt also raised concern over the nearing phase-out of the Ranijamara–Gulariya Irrigation Project, which has seen millions in investment. He urged the government to ensure water delivery to farmlands to boost agricultural productivity. He further demanded the swift completion of the Dhangadhi–Dipayal expressway and drew attention to the threat posed by the Karnali River erosion to Tikapur’s historic park.

Similarly, CPN (Unified Socialist) MP Madankumari Shah emphasized the vast potential of Far-Western Nepal for religious and tourism development. She urged the government to announce a special tourism package, including one-time tax exemptions on tourism infrastructure and a ten-year income tax holiday.

MP Shah also demanded a special program for the preservation, excavation, and promotion of the region’s language, literature, culture, and history. She called for adequate allocation for the Far-Western Province in the upcoming budget and its recognition as a special province with appropriate policy and financial support.
