The renowned Mundum Trail in Bhojpur, listed among the government’s “100 Must-Visit Destinations,” is set for significant upgrades with an investment exceeding NPR 19 million.
A collaborative initiative involving Temkemaiyung Rural Municipality, the Swiss government, and both provincial and federal governments will fund the project. The total investment of NPR 19.05 million will be directed toward expanding and reconstructing the trail, adding local art installations, information boards, drinking water facilities, and public toilets.
Chief Administrative Officer Biken Paudel provided a breakdown of the funding: NPR 4.5 million from the rural municipality, NPR 5.215 million from the provincial government, NPR 1.05 million from the federal government, and NPR 4.25 million from the Swiss government. This comprehensive financial support aims to enhance the tourist experience on the trail.
“The Mundum Trail is fast becoming a premier tourist destination in Nepal,” Paudel remarked. “This budget allocation will support its further development and expansion.”
Vice President of the Rural Municipality, Ramadevi Rai, emphasized that the new fiscal year’s budget prioritizes tourism promotion. She mentioned that the construction of a tourism information center at Chakewa, funded by the rural municipality and the provincial government, is nearing completion. “Our region has immense potential in agriculture and tourism. We are focusing on planned development to harness these sectors. With the Mundum Trail gaining popularity, further investment is crucial for its expansion and proper management,” Rai stated.
Rural Municipality President Saroj Basnet highlighted the aim to develop the Mundum Trail as a sustainable revenue source for the municipality. “The Mundum Trail offers stunning views of several Himalayan peaks, including Fourpate, Mera Peak, Nuptse, Everest, Lhotse, Lhotsesaar, Peak 38, Chamlang, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, and Kumbhakarna. Its growing appeal among tourists drives us to ensure systematic development,” Basnet explained. “As part of the ‘100 Must-Visit Destinations,’ we are strategically working to further enhance the trail and establish it as a sustainable income source for our municipality.”
The Mundum Trail also boasts cultural and natural attractions, including structures showcasing the traditions of the Kirat Rai community, grasslands, and local herders with their yaks and sheep, offering a unique and enriching experience for trekkers.
