Manakamana Cable Car Enters Major Upgrade Phase After 25 Years of Service

Manakamana Cable Car, Nepal’s pioneering and most popular cable car system, is set to undergo a significant technological upgrade as it celebrates its 26th year of operation. Imported from Austria’s renowned Doppelmayr company, the cable car system has operated seamlessly since its inception, making it a landmark in Nepal’s tourism infrastructure.

The current analog-based technology, including the DC current-driven main motor, will be replaced with state-of-the-art digital technology known as Doppelmayr’s D-Connect System. This upgrade marks a shift towards digital control systems and AC-powered main motors, enhancing operational efficiency and reliability. The communication cables spanning approximately 3200 meters will also be upgraded to align with modern digital standards.

Key components such as the main haulage cable, spanning approximately 6500 meters, will undergo replacement due to aging, ensuring continued safety and operational integrity. Grips, crucial for the safety of gondolas, were recently replaced two years ago to maintain peak performance standards.

“The upgrade process, overseen by Doppelmayr technicians, is estimated to take around 50 days, with potential adjustments based on weather conditions,” remarked a spokesperson for Manakamana Cable Car. “During this period, essential tasks include changing the main haulage cable, upgrading communication wires, installing digital control systems, rewiring, and transitioning from DC to AC main motor drive.”

Despite the upgrade activities, the cable car’s lower station restaurant will remain operational, providing uninterrupted service to visitors. The station buildings, towers, bull wheels, bullwheel frames, and gondolas will remain intact, having undergone recent inspections and necessary maintenance.

“The investment for this comprehensive upgrade is approximately Rs. 50 crore,” added the spokesperson. “This investment underscores our commitment to enhancing visitor experience and ensuring the long-term sustainability of this iconic transportation system.”

Manakamana Cable Car has been a pivotal attraction for tourists and pilgrims visiting the Manakamana Temple, offering breathtaking views and convenient access to the hilltop shrine. The upgraded system will also feature enhanced remote monitoring capabilities, allowing for proactive maintenance and swift technical support from Austria when needed.

Manakamana Cable Car, inaugurated in 1998, is Nepal’s first and most popular cable car system, connecting Kurintar to the revered Manakamana Temple. Operated by advanced technology from Doppelmayr, it has become a symbol of safe and efficient transportation, serving millions of visitors annually.
