Manang Prepares for Potential Monsoon Disasters

With the onset of the monsoon, Manang is actively getting ready to tackle potential disaster risks. The District Disaster Management Committee has introduced a range of initiatives to minimize these risks and ensure the safety of both residents and visitors. A key area of focus is the monitoring of crucial trekking routes, notably the path to Tilicho Lake at 4,916 meters and the Annapurna Circuit trail passing through Thorong La Pass.

Subash Kumar Lamichhane, the Chief District Officer and Committee Chairperson highlighted that this monitoring is aimed at averting accidents on these well-liked trails. Moreover, tourism entrepreneurs in busy tourist areas like Khangsar, Yak Kharka, Ledar, High Camp, and Base Camp have been made aware of the safety measures.

Moreover, security agencies have proposed the establishment of awareness and information stations in the Mustang region. The district has also received updated rescue equipment, and authorities are responsible for ensuring its accessibility. Personnel are required to notify the Disaster Management Committee before departing the district, and disaster assistance desks have been set up at the municipal level. Local response teams, such as the Red Cross, are prepared to take quick action in crises.

The primary emergency response team of the district, consisting of the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and the Nepal Army, is on high alert. The Disaster Management Committee is actively gathering data on the condition of existing sign poles and trail markers and is informing the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) about necessary updates and new installations.

The Chairperson of Neshyang Rural Municipality, Kanchha Ghale, stated that they are making preparations according to the Committee’s directives. They have established disaster assistance desks at municipality and ward levels. In the particularly vulnerable municipalities of Chame and Naso, they have organized awareness programs and additional assistance desks to improve their readiness and response abilities. This thorough strategy is meant to ensure that Manang is ready to manage any potential disasters during the monsoon season, protecting both residents and tourists.
