The Manaslu trekking route has resumed after a temporary wooden bridge and an alternative trail were constructed at Suksam Khola in Chumnubri Rural Municipality, Gorkha. The trekking route had been disrupted after floods in the Therang Khola area on Sunday morning swept away a suspension bridge, leaving trekkers unable to continue their journeys through the popular Manaslu region. Following the disruption, the District Administration Office had advised trekkers to avoid travelling along the affected section until a safe alternative was established.
Temporary Bridge Restores Trekking Access
A wooden footbridge has now been constructed at the site where the suspension bridge over Suksam Khola was washed away. An alternative route was also developed to provide safe passage around the damaged section. The work was carried out under the leadership of Pema Gyalpo Lama, Chairperson of Chumnubri Rural Municipality–4, with active support from the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP).
According to Chumnubri Rural Municipality Chief Administrative Officer Manoj Lamichhane, the temporary bridge and alternative trail were completed within two days. With the new crossing in place, trekkers who had been temporarily stranded along the route have been able to resume their journeys toward their destinations.
Flood-Damaged Homes and Bridges
The flash flood in Therang Khola on Sunday morning caused damage to four houses and swept away two bridges, disrupting movement in the area. One of the bridges destroyed by the flood was the suspension bridge at Suksam Khola, which served as an important crossing point along the Manaslu trekking route. The construction of the temporary wooden bridge has restored basic connectivity, allowing trekkers and residents to cross the affected section while authorities work toward a more permanent solution.
Permanent Infrastructure Planned
A meeting held at the District Administration Office on Monday in the presence of Gandaki Province Minister for Physical Infrastructure Nandaprasad Neupane decided that the provincial government would take responsibility for constructing a permanent bridge. The meeting also agreed to clear landslides and other obstructions along the Manaslu trekking route to improve access and restore the trail to a safer and more reliable condition.
The reopening provides relief to trekkers currently travelling in the Manaslu region, particularly during the trekking season. However, visitors are advised to remain cautious around areas affected by recent floods and landslides and to follow updates and instructions from local authorities and trekking agencies. The Manaslu region remains one of Nepal’s major trekking destinations, and restoring access to the trail is important for both tourist safety and the local tourism economy.
