Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey, emphasized the importance of the private sector in advancing the tourism sector for its prosperity. Speaking at today’s meeting of the International Relations and Tourism Committee of the House of Representatives, he shared updates on two stakeholder meetings that have already been conducted to bring together all three levels of government to discuss the development of the tourism sector.
Minister Pandey stated, “We are organizing comprehensive discussions to resolve issues within the tourism sector, including those related to airlines. We expect the committee’s support and cooperation in these discussions.” He also mentioned that reviews are being carried out to ensure the regular operation of Pokhara and Bhairahawa airports, adding that once certain agencies are involved, both airports will operate on a regular schedule.
The Minister also informed the committee that the tourism culture policy is in its final stages, and the Civil Aviation Bill has been passed by the Cabinet. The Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Ganesh Prasad Pandey, provided an update on the ministry’s work, highlighting that the committee has been unable to meet its expectations in terms of capital, technology, and human resources.
In the meeting chaired by Committee President Rajkishore Yadav, former Prime Minister and committee member Madhav Kumar Nepal stressed that no alternatives should be considered for the Nijgadh International Airport, urging the search for investors for its construction. He remarked, “Nijgadh is the only viable alternative to Kathmandu’s airport and should be given priority, considering its potential role as a transit hub.”
Former Prime Minister Nepal further stated that any project should not be carried out based on assumptions but should be carefully evaluated to determine its necessity. He emphasized that destinations should be kept clean and well-maintained to attract tourists.
Member of Parliament Prabhu Sah raised concerns over the lack of attention to Nijgadh Airport and questioned why it is not a priority for the ministry. Additionally, he drew the minister’s attention to the misuse of archaeological excavations.
MP Dhawal Shamsher Jabra praised the initiative to make local bodies responsible for tourism management. He suggested that more efforts should be made to encourage tourists visiting the country.
