Minister Pandey Hails BP Koirala as the Guru of Democratic Socialism

Minister for Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, Badri Prasad Pandey, lauded BP Koirala as the pioneer of democratic socialism in Nepal during the BP Koirala National Award, 2080 Conferment Ceremony. The event, organized by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, took place at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar to commemorate the 42nd Memorial Day of BP Koirala, Nepal’s first democratically elected Prime Minister.

In his address, Minister Pandey highlighted BP Koirala’s significant contributions to Nepal’s political and literary landscape. He noted that BP Koirala’s vision for a “socialism-oriented constitution,” conceived in 2007 BS, was realized nearly seven decades later. Pandey emphasized that BP Koirala’s political philosophy laid the groundwork for his esteemed reputation both within Nepal and internationally. BP Koirala’s election as Vice-President of the Socialist International in 2016 BS was a testament to his global influence.

Minister Pandey further articulated BP Koirala’s advocacy for equality and freedom, aiming to transform Nepal into one of the happiest countries in the world. He stressed the importance of implementing these principles in the current constitution. Pandey also acknowledged the collaboration between Nepal’s two largest political parties, led by Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, to address economic challenges and combat corruption.

Former Minister and lawmaker Gyanendra Bahadur Karki reiterated that the alliance between the Nepali Congress and the CPN (UML) is focused on national development and problem-solving, rather than political power struggles or retribution.

During the ceremony, Ministry Secretary Dr. Ganesh Prasad Pandeya announced the recipients of the BP Koirala National Award 2080. The award, which includes a purse of Rs 200,000, was presented to Kishor Kumar Adhikari and Homnath Dahal for their contributions to political philosophy. In the literary category, Prof. Dr. Yogendra Prasad Yadav and Prof. Hari Prasad Sharma Parajuli were honored. The Ministry has been presenting the BP Koirala National Award since 2078 BS.

This year’s awards continue to celebrate the legacy of BP Koirala, recognizing individuals who embody his vision and dedication to the nation.
