Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung Emphasizes Ethnic Unity and Cultural Preservation at Nepal Sambat Memorial

Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, underscored the importance of ethnic goodwill and the need to protect Nepal’s cultural heritage during an event commemorating the memorial day of national luminary Shankhadhar Sakhwa, the founder of Nepal Sambat. The program was organized by the Padma Ratna Tuladhar Lumati Guthi in the capital today.

Minister Gurung stressed that ethnic unity is a source of strength for Nepal, highlighting that any attempts to weaken society would first target its cultural foundations. “A society united by culture is a powerful one. Anyone who seeks to weaken that unity will begin by attacking culture,” he remarked.

Gurung further emphasized that nationalism transcends geographical boundaries and should be found in the faces of all Nepali citizens. “Nationalism is not confined to borders. It lives in the hearts of every Nepali,” he asserted, calling for greater attention to the preservation of diverse languages and cultures.

The Minister specifically called for the conservation of languages spoken by various ethnic groups, especially those that are endangered. “The home is the first school for language conservation. Ethnic languages, which are no longer widely spoken or taught in schools and lack formal grammatical structure, should be preserved starting from the home,” he said.

The government’s Spokesperson, while addressing the gathering, committed to further promoting the importance of Nepal Sambat, which is celebrated for its historical and cultural significance. He also emphasized that Nepal’s linguistic diversity has earned global recognition, particularly by the United Nations, and that the State would continue to promote Nepal Bhasha and the Nepal Mandal.

Kathmandu Metropolis Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol also spoke at the event, stressing the need for increased efforts by the government to conserve Nepal Bhasha and other indigenous languages throughout the country.

Former Minister and Guthi Chair Keshab Man Shakya concluded the program by advocating for the government to draw inspiration from Shankhadhar Sakhwa’s leadership, his contributions to social justice, and his exemplary crisis management skills.
