Mixed Weather Patterns Observed: Westerly, Local, and Monsoon Winds Influence

The Weather Forecasting Division has reported a diverse pattern of weather activity across Nepal, as different climatic systems are simultaneously influencing various parts of the country. The western and central belts are currently experiencing the effects of westerly and local winds, while the eastern region, particularly Koshi Province, continues to remain under the significant influence of monsoon winds.

Weather Patterns of Nepal

According to the Division, the central and western parts of Nepal, including areas in Karnali, Sudurpaschim, Lumbini, and parts of Gandaki Province, are observing changes in weather due to the active presence of westerly and local wind systems. These wind patterns are typical during transitional periods and are known to bring occasional light rainfall, increased wind activity, and sudden shifts in temperature across the region. As a result, a mix of clear skies and overcast conditions is being experienced, particularly in the hilly and mountainous belts.

Meanwhile, Koshi Province is currently experiencing typical monsoon conditions, with the monsoon wind system dominating the weather pattern in this region. The Division has noted that the hilly areas of Koshi, along with those in Lumbini Province, are expected to remain generally cloudy throughout the day. These areas may also experience sporadic light rainfall, accompanied by thunder and lightning in some pockets, particularly during the late afternoon and evening hours.

The upper hilly and mountainous regions across several provinces, including Karnali and Gandaki, are forecasted to receive light rain and even snowfall in isolated places. Although it is not yet the peak winter season, such snowfall is common in higher elevations when cold western winds interact with existing moisture in the atmosphere. In these elevated areas, temperatures remain low year-round, and snowfall during such interactions is a normal meteorological occurrence.

In terms of night weather conditions, the Division has stated that Koshi, Gandaki, and Lumbini Provinces will likely experience partly to generally cloudy skies later tonight. The cloudy conditions may persist in the hilly regions and contribute to a drop in nighttime temperatures. However, the remaining parts of the country, especially the southern plains and lower valleys, are predicted to remain fair to partly cloudy, offering more stable weather for residents and travelers.

The weather update also includes a caution for those residing or traveling in the upper hilly and mountainous regions of Karnali Province, as light rainfall and isolated snowfall could affect travel routes and visibility. While the precipitation is not expected to be intense, it could cause slippery trails and sudden weather shifts in trekking and high-altitude areas.

This blend of weather conditions is not unusual for Nepal during the transition period from spring to summer, especially when the monsoon gradually gains strength in the east while westerly winds continue to influence the weather in the west. The simultaneous presence of multiple wind systems across the country results in a patchwork of local weather variations, making forecasting both important and complex.

Agriculturally, the onset of monsoon in Koshi Province is a promising sign, as it supports early paddy plantation and improves soil moisture for seasonal crops. Farmers in the region are likely to begin preparing their fields if the current trend continues and widespread rainfall develops in the coming days. Conversely, areas under the influence of westerly winds may need to wait longer for consistent precipitation.

Tourism-related activities, especially trekking and mountain expeditions, may face occasional interruptions due to localized rain, snowfall, and cloud cover, especially in regions such as Karnali and Gandaki. Travelers are advised to check with local authorities and weather bulletins before making journeys into high-altitude destinations. The current weather across Nepal presents a mosaic of conditions driven by varying wind systems.

With Koshi Province feeling the early push of monsoon rain and the central and western regions dealing with the remnants of westerly and local wind impacts, residents and stakeholders across the country are encouraged to remain updated with official forecasts and advisories. As the monsoon season continues to approach in full swing, further changes are expected in the weather dynamics across all provinces in the coming weeks. The Weather Forecasting Division has assured that regular updates will be made available to the public as conditions evolve.
