Members of Parliament have called for the transparent management of offerings made at temples and the preservation and proper utilization of Guthi properties. During a meeting of the National Concerns and Federal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly today, MPs highlighted the importance of transparency and the effective use of these resources.
The discussion focused on the current state, challenges, and issues surrounding the land of Boudhanath Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, particularly the land under the Boudha Melamchi Ghyang Guthi. The MPs stressed the need for transparent management and proper utilization of offerings and Guthi properties. They underscored the importance of preserving and managing land under Guthi ownership to ensure the state’s assets are used effectively.
Committee Chairperson Sonam Geljen Sherpa expressed concerns that not all assets associated with World Heritage Sites have been brought under the Guthi system. He emphasized, “Transparency in the management of offerings at temples, including those under Guthi, is essential, and we are discussing these matters.”
Committee member Gopi Bahadur Sarki Achhami highlighted the necessity for policies concerning the management of temple offerings and the preservation of Guthi properties. He pointed out the lack of coordination between temple priests and development committee members, urging for a resolution of misunderstandings to move forward.
Arjun Prasad Pokharel, Secretary of the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, and Poverty Alleviation, stressed the need for proper documentation of Guthi properties. He remarked, “Only by preserving our religious and cultural assets can we promote tourism development. Coordination among all stakeholders is crucial for their protection.”
