National Assembly President Narayan Prasad Dahal Emphasizes Tourism Sector Development for Economic Self-reliance

The Chairman of the National Assembly, Narayan Prasad Dahal, highlighted the imperative need for developing the tourism sector to achieve economic self-reliance in Nepal. Speaking at the inauguration of the 28th and 29th Annual General Assembly and Elections of the Thamel Tourism Development Council, Dahal emphasized the boundless potential for tourism in Nepal and underscored the necessity to promote the country’s heritage from the iconic summit of Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) to the birthplace of Buddha in Lumbini on a global scale.

Dahal acknowledged Nepal’s prime destination status in cultural and adventure tourism but stressed the council’s role in overcoming challenges posed by commercial and other obstacles within Thamel, a hub of national and international tourism. He expressed the council’s commitment to advancing Thamel through strategic planning and business ethics, emphasizing the creation of a safe, secure, and business-friendly environment.

Furthermore, Dahal addressed legislative barriers hindering development, highlighting ongoing efforts to amend purchase laws critical for advancement. He urged the council members to select capable and visionary leadership to ensure effective governance and sustainable urban development within Thamel.

Dr. Ganesh Prasad Pandey, Secretary of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, emphasized the council’s responsibility to operate Thamel efficiently and without malpractice. He noted the need for improved traffic management and envisioned Thamel as a premier global destination for tourists.

Khemraj Tiwari, Ward Chairman of Kathmandu Metropolitan City – 26, emphasized Thamel’s significance in Nepal’s tourism sector, citing its role in attracting over 80% of foreign visitors. He expressed gratitude for ongoing initiatives and pledged local government cooperation to systematically develop Thamel as a tourist hub.

Ram Prasad (Kamal) Sapkota, Vice-Chairman of the Nepal Tourism Board, underscored the board’s commitment to positioning Thamel internationally through meticulous planning and promotion.

Chairman Bhabishwor Sharma expressed confidence in fulfilling pending projects, such as the construction of Digital Thamel, during his upcoming tenure. Deputy Chairman Sahadev Dhamala reaffirmed the council’s dedication to transforming Thamel into a premier tourist destination.

The council is slated for elections today, with 1,193 votes expected for the 15-member executive committee.
