National Library Day Celebrated Across Nepal with a Focus on Continuous Education

The 17th National Library Day is being observed today across Nepal with a series of programs and events aimed at promoting the importance of libraries in fostering continuous education. Celebrated annually on Bhadra 15 in the Lunar calendar, the day marks the historic moment in 1869 BS when King Griwanayuddha Bikram Shah endorsed the law establishing libraries in Nepal.

This year’s celebrations are being led by a main organizing committee chaired by Dr. Deepak Kafley, Secretary at the Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology. The committee has organized an event to honor outstanding librarians and readers who have contributed significantly to the library sector.

A recent survey conducted by the Ministry of Education in the fiscal year 2078/79 revealed that Nepal is home to 928 community and public libraries. However, the survey highlighted a concerning issue: only 227 of these libraries are currently functioning properly.

Rajendra Pandey, General Secretary of the Nepal Community Library Association, stressed the importance of ensuring that all libraries operate effectively. He also called for policies to encourage the establishment of new libraries in areas where they are needed.

The theme for this year’s Library Day, “Library for Continuous Education,” underscores the vital role that libraries play in providing ongoing educational opportunities for people of all ages across the country.
