Nepal and China’s Anhui Province Forge Powerful Tourism Alliance with Grand Promotional Event

A high-profile tourism promotion event between Nepal and China’s Anhui Province was held in Kathmandu today, drawing the participation of politicians, diplomats, government officials, and leading representatives from the tourism sector. The gathering served as a platform to explore opportunities for deeper tourism cooperation, cultural exchanges, and economic collaboration between the two sides.

A Win-Win Partnership for Tourism Development

Speakers at the event emphasized that Nepal-China cooperation in the tourism sector represents a win-win situation, bringing together diverse civilizations, cultures, peoples, and opportunities for mutual learning. The program was jointly organized by the Kathmandu Office of the China Cultural Center and the Anhui Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism.

Former Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal highlighted the deep-rooted friendship and partnership between Nepal and China, noting that the two nations are bound not only by the Himalayan range but also by centuries-old cultural, economic, and people-to-people ties. “We are revitalizing the same spirit under the Belt and Road Initiative,” Khanal said, describing the tourism promotional event as a model example of shared vision in a historical journey.

Anhui Province: A Hub of Culture and Natural Beauty

Sun Yong, Deputy Governor of Anhui Province, introduced Anhui as a region blessed with rich cultural and natural heritage, strategically located between rivers and mountains, and serving as an important trade hub. He noted that relations between Nepal and China have entered a new phase focused on economic development and prosperity. “We want to make culture and tourism the foundation of our relations and expect to deepen ties in trade, business, education, and other sectors in the future,” he said.

Chinese Ambassador Emphasizes Development Cooperation

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, Chen Song, underscored the relevance of the Chinese model in addressing Nepal’s development challenges. He said the Anhui delegation brought with it the “Anhui model” of development, which could contribute to Nepal’s transformation.

Ambassador Chen praised the natural beauty, Buddhist cultural heritage, and green industries of both Nepal and Anhui Province, expressing optimism about enhanced tourism, economic, and cultural ties. He also acknowledged the efforts of the Pokhara Metropolitan City and Lumbini Development Trust in advancing this cooperation. Describing Anhui as one of China’s most attractive tourist destinations and a leader in sustainable development, he noted its wealth of water resources and mountainous landscapes.

Nepal Invites Chinese Investment in Tourism

Industry Secretary Ram Prasad Ghimire spoke about Nepal’s abundant religious and cultural heritage, encouraging Chinese entrepreneurs to invest in Nepal’s tourism sector. He emphasized that Nepal offers vast opportunities for joint ventures in hospitality, adventure tourism, and cultural tourism.

Dipak Raj Joshi, CEO of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), reinforced the importance of the Chinese market for Nepal’s tourism industry. “China is one of our most important tourism markets, and we deeply value the growing number of Chinese travelers choosing Nepal as their destination,” Joshi said. He called for more collaboration to share China’s prosperity with Nepal and noted that tourism and cultural exchanges between Nepal and Anhui could become a model of cooperation.

Formalizing Tourism Cooperation: Pokhara and Huangshan MoU

One of the highlights of the event was the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Pokhara Metropolitan City and Huangshan Municipality of Anhui Province for tourism cooperation. Huangshan, like Pokhara, is a renowned tourist destination, famous for its natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The MoU was signed and exchanged by Pokhara’s Mayor Dhan Raj Acharya and Huangshan’s Deputy Mayor Liu Li. The agreement aims to promote joint tourism marketing, knowledge exchange, and collaboration between tourism entrepreneurs from both cities.

Showcasing Opportunities and Attractions

The event attracted a large number of tourism entrepreneurs, airline representatives, government officials, and tour operators from both Nepal and China. Officials from Anhui’s railway and culture departments were also present, highlighting opportunities in transportation and cultural tourism.

A video presentation showcased Anhui’s natural attractions, infrastructure development, tourism products, and agricultural advancements. The province’s capital, Hefei, was also highlighted as a powerhouse for electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing in China, reflecting its modern industrial strength alongside its cultural heritage.

Marking 70 Years of Nepal-China Diplomatic Relations

This year marks the 70th anniversary of the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between Nepal and China. To commemorate this milestone, both governments and private stakeholders have been organizing various events, with tourism promotion being a major focus. The Kathmandu-Anhui tourism event was one of the key initiatives in this series of celebrations, aimed at deepening people-to-people connections and boosting economic cooperation.

Strengthening Cultural and Economic Bonds

Organizers believe the event will not only attract more Chinese tourists to Nepal but also provide Nepali tour and travel agencies with accurate information to offer better services for tourists visiting China. By showcasing the cultural, natural, and economic potential of both sides, the event aimed to lay the groundwork for long-term cooperation.

The collaboration between Nepal and Anhui Province aligns with both countries’ strategic goals to enhance connectivity, develop sustainable tourism, and foster mutual prosperity. With both regions offering rich natural beauty, cultural heritage, and unique tourism products, stakeholders expressed optimism about the future of this partnership.
