Nepal Begins Issuing Permits for Autumn Mountaineering Season

The Nepalese government has commenced the issuance of permits for mountaineering expeditions scheduled for the autumn season. According to the Department of Tourism, a total of 132 climbers from 12 different teams have already secured their permits for various peaks.

Among the expeditions, Manaslu (8,163 meters) is the most popular choice, with 120 climbers across 10 teams receiving permission to scale this Himalayan giant. In addition, a team of seven climbers has obtained permits for Putha Hiunchuli (7,246 meters), and another team of five has been cleared to ascend Annapurna IV (7,525 meters).

So far, the government has collected a total of NPR 13,096,264 in royalties from these expeditions. Climbers from the United States lead the pack with 20 participants, followed by Japan with 17, the United Kingdom with 15, and China with 13. Notably, only one Nepali climber has applied for and received a permit this season.

The autumn season is traditionally busy for mountaineering in Nepal, especially on peaks other than Mount Everest. This trend is evident this year as well, with climbers focusing on other significant peaks, contributing to Nepal’s rich mountaineering legacy and the tourism sector at large.
