Nepal Internet Foundation has been awarded the prestigious Emerging Digital Solutions and Ecosystem Award 2024 at the ASOCIO Digital Summit held in Tokyo, Japan. Organized by the Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organization (ASOCIO), the summit recognized the Foundation’s innovative work in delivering essential digital services through its Everest Community Network (ECN) project.
The ECN project, established in the remote villages of Khunde and Khumjung at an altitude of 4,000 meters, has played a vital role in providing internet connectivity, promoting ecotourism, and advancing environmental conservation. By extending reliable internet services to these Himalayan villages, the Nepal Internet Foundation has bridged the digital divide in Khunde and Khumjung, empowering the local Sherpa communities with digital tools and resources.
During the devastating floods that hit Thame village in the Khumbu region on August 16, the Everest Community Network proved instrumental in maintaining communication channels, showcasing the critical role of reliable internet access in saving lives, ensuring community safety, and supporting effective disaster response efforts.
Through innovative use of technology, the ECN project has made significant contributions to local education, healthcare, information access, tourism promotion, Sherpa homestays, internet banking, and community engagement. This impactful work earned the Nepal Internet Foundation the ASOCIO award, highlighting its commitment to technological advancement and social good.
ASOCIO is an international federation of IT-related associations from 24 Asian nations, recognizing outstanding service providers through its annual digital summit. This year, more than 200 institutions competed in various categories, making the Foundation’s win a distinguished achievement.
