Nepal Targets Indian Market to Boost Wedding Tourism Amid Global Travel Disruptions

Amid rising instability in global tourism and disruptions in international air routes caused by escalating tensions in West Asia, the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has stepped up its targeted promotional efforts in neighboring India. Recognizing India as its largest and most reliable source market, Nepal is focusing on niche, high-value tourism segments to sustain growth despite global uncertainties. One such segment gaining increasing attention is destination wedding tourism.

As part of this strategic shift, Nepal was showcased as a premier wedding destination during a special promotional event held in New Delhi. The initiative reflects NTB’s proactive approach to diversifying tourism offerings and strengthening regional partnerships at a time when long-haul travel is facing disruptions.

“Nepal Destination Wedding & OTAs Connect” Event

The NTB, in collaboration with the Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN) and the Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi, organized the “Nepal Destination Wedding & OTAs Connect” event on April 28–29. The two-day program brought together key stakeholders from Nepal and India’s tourism, hospitality, and wedding planning industries.

The event aimed to position Nepal as a dream wedding destination that combines cultural richness, scenic beauty, and traditional heritage. It served as a platform for business-to-business (B2B) engagement, allowing Nepali tourism entrepreneurs to connect directly with Indian wedding planners and online travel agencies (OTAs).

According to NTB Senior Officer Robin Regmi, the event witnessed participation from 21 leading Nepali companies and 45 Indian marriage ceremony planners. Nepali delegates presented a wide range of premium offerings, including luxury hotels, boutique resorts, and customized marriage ceremony services designed to cater to high-end clientele. “Through B2B meetings, presentations, networking sessions, and discussions, the event has laid a strong foundation for expanding Nepal-India collaboration in wedding tourism,” Regmi stated.

Wedding Tourism: A High-Potential Segment

Chief Executive Officer of NTB, Deepak Raj Joshi, highlighted wedding tourism as one of the most promising segments for Nepal’s tourism industry. He noted that Nepal offers a diverse range of venues, from luxury resorts nestled in the Himalayas to culturally significant heritage sites, that can cater to varied preferences and budgets.

“Nepal offers immense opportunities in marriage ceremony tourism, with a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural authenticity,” Joshi said. He added that such initiatives are expected not only to boost tourist arrivals but also to promote high-value tourism, which generates greater economic benefits compared to traditional travel segments. The focus on wedding tourism is also aligned with Nepal’s broader strategy of attracting quality tourists who contribute significantly to local economies through extended stays and premium services.

Strengthening Nepal-India Collaboration

Industry leaders from both countries emphasized the importance of stronger collaboration to unlock the full potential of wedding tourism. President of the Hotel Association of Nepal, Binayak Shah, underscored the need for coordinated efforts between tourism stakeholders in Nepal and India.

Similarly, Niraj Dhawan, President of the Indian Wedding Planner Association, pointed out that destination weddings are becoming increasingly popular among Indian couples, creating a significant opportunity for Nepal to tap into this lucrative market.

From the diplomatic front, Dr. Surendra Thapa highlighted the deep-rooted cultural and historical ties between Nepal and India. He expressed confidence that such initiatives would further strengthen bilateral tourism cooperation and foster closer people-to-people connections.

Showcasing Nepal’s Unique Appeal

The event also featured insights from NTB Director Laxman Gautam, who elaborated on the cultural significance of marriage ceremony in Eastern societies. He emphasized Nepal’s unique ability to offer culturally immersive experiences that resonate strongly with Indian traditions and values.

“With our stunning venues, warm hospitality, and vibrant culture, we are ready to welcome Indian wedding planners and their clients to experience the magic of Nepal,” Gautam said. Participants were introduced to Nepal’s diverse wedding destinations, ranging from serene mountain backdrops to historic temples and luxury resorts. These offerings position Nepal as an attractive alternative to more crowded and expensive international wedding destinations.

India Remains Nepal’s Largest Source Market

Recent data from the Nepal Tourism Board reinforces India’s importance in Nepal’s tourism landscape. In 2025, Nepal recorded a total of 1,158,451 international tourist arrivals, of which 292,438, representing 25.2 percent, were from India.

This strong market share highlights the need for continued engagement and targeted promotions in India. By focusing on high-spending segments such as destination weddings, Nepal aims to maximize economic returns while ensuring a steady flow of visitors throughout the year.

Outlook for Sustainable Tourism Growth

According to NTB official Regmi, promoting wedding tourism in India is expected to attract affluent travelers and ensure year-round tourism activity, reducing seasonal fluctuations. The initiative is also anticipated to create opportunities for allied sectors, including event management, catering, transportation, and cultural services.

As global travel patterns continue to shift due to geopolitical tensions and route disruptions, Nepal’s emphasis on regional markets and niche tourism segments appears both timely and strategic. By positioning itself as a hub for culturally rich and luxurious wedding experiences, Nepal is not only strengthening its tourism brand but also paving the way for more resilient and sustainable growth in the years ahead.
