Nepalgunj Hosts Street Food and Beverage Festival to Promote Local Cuisine and Tourism

A vibrant food and cultural celebration has begun in Nepalgunj with the launch of the “Nepalgunj Street Food and Beverage Festival,” aimed at promoting local cuisine and strengthening the region’s tourism appeal. The three-day festival, which started on Friday, is being jointly organized by the Hotel Entrepreneurs Association Banke and Hotel Association Nepal (Banke chapter), with promotional support from the Nepal Tourism Board.

The event is taking place along Surkhet Road, stretching from the Sushil Koirala Memorial Gate to the western Waterpark area, transforming the bustling corridor into a lively hub of food, music, and cultural exchange. Organizers say the initiative is designed not only to celebrate Nepalgunj’s culinary identity but also to position the city as an emerging “food destination” in western Nepal.

Boosting Tourism and Local Businesses

According to Bhimlal Kandel, President of the Hotel Entrepreneurs Association Banke, the festival seeks to establish the identity of local dishes while simultaneously promoting tourism in Nepalgunj and the wider Banke district. He emphasized that such events play a crucial role in supporting local hospitality businesses and creating new economic opportunities.

The festival has already attracted around 5,000 visitors, including domestic tourists and a significant number of guests from neighboring India. The cross-border participation highlights Nepalgunj’s strategic location as a gateway city and its potential to draw international visitors through cultural and culinary tourism.

Diverse Food Experience in One Venue

One of the key attractions of the festival is the wide variety of food available in a single location. From popular street food items to dishes prepared by high-end hotel establishments, the festival offers a diverse culinary experience for visitors.

Food and Beverage Festival

Around 40 stalls have been set up by various businesses, showcasing traditional local delicacies, modern fusion dishes, beverages, and desserts. Visitors can explore everything from authentic Nepali snacks to contemporary cuisine, reflecting both tradition and innovation in the country’s food culture.

Organizers believe that bringing together such a wide range of food options under one roof helps promote local products and encourages collaboration among businesses in the hospitality sector.

Cultural Performances and Entertainment

Beyond food, the festival offers a rich lineup of cultural and entertainment programs. Visitors are being treated to performances ranging from traditional local dances to live music shows featuring popular bands such as “Phirante,” “The Jappers,” “Rockheads,” and “The Black Hole.”

Renowned Nepali singer Ram Krishna Dhakal is also set to perform, alongside actor and comedian Bijay Baral and actress Barsha Raut. Comedian Mexam Gaudel will add humor to the program lineup. In addition, the festival features performances by both local and international artists, including dancers from Russia, offering audiences a blend of cultural diversity and global artistic exchange.

Evening-Focused Events for Visitor Comfort

Considering the heat during daytime in Nepalgunj, organizers have scheduled the main activities during the evening hours. The festival runs daily from 6 PM to 11 PM, allowing visitors to comfortably enjoy food, music, and cultural shows in a more pleasant environment. This timing has also contributed to increased footfall, as families, youth, and tourists gather in the evening to experience the lively atmosphere.

Strengthening Nepalgunj’s Identity as a Food Destination

The festival is being viewed as a strategic effort to promote Nepalgunj as a culinary hub while supporting local producers and entrepreneurs. By highlighting indigenous dishes alongside modern offerings, the event aims to preserve traditional food heritage while adapting to changing consumer preferences. Organizers are optimistic that the festival will not only boost local businesses in the short term but also create long-term recognition for Nepalgunj in Nepal’s tourism map.

With growing interest from both domestic and international visitors, such initiatives are expected to play a vital role in expanding cultural and experiential tourism in the region. As the festival continues through the weekend, it stands as a celebration of flavour, culture, and community, bringing people together through the universal language of food while showcasing the unique identity of Nepalgunj.
