Nepali Community In New York Celebrates Nepal Day Parade With Cultural Pride

The Nepali community in New York, along with participants from New Jersey and Connecticut, came together on Sunday to celebrate Nepal Utsav, popularly known as the Nepal Day Parade, with vibrant enthusiasm and cultural flair. The event was organized with the aim of promoting Nepal’s tourism and showcasing its rich cultural heritage to the international community.

Participants adorned in traditional Nepali attire marched through the busy streets of Manhattan, proudly waving the national flag and carrying banners that reflected the spirit of Nepal. The parade featured traditional music, including Panche Baja, as well as performances of bhajans, Deuda, Hudkeli, Sorathi, Maithili, Sherpa, and Tamang Selos, drawing attention from the diverse local American audience who watched with great interest.

Nepal Day Parade In New York

The event was formally inaugurated by New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Senator Chuck Schumer, who both expressed their admiration for Nepali art and culture. They acknowledged that the cultural diversity presented by the Nepali community contributes to making New York City even more inclusive and vibrant.

Nepal’s tourism promoter Gokul Shrestha, representing the Government of Nepal, highlighted the significance of the parade, stating that it plays an important role in introducing Nepal to the global stage and capturing the interest of international audiences. He noted that the Nepal Day Parade, held every year in honor of Nepal’s Republic Day, serves as a powerful cultural and diplomatic tool abroad.

The event was organized by the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) New York Chapter, in collaboration with over a dozen Nepali organizations based in the U.S. NRNA New York Chapter President Chhiring Sherpa led the event, while Manita Gurung served as the coordinator.

According to community leaders, the Nepal Day Parade launched in 2016 has now become a symbolic national celebration for the Nepali diaspora in the United States, fostering unity and pride among Nepalis living abroad while strengthening Nepal’s cultural identity on the global platform.
