Nepali Documentary ‘Zero to 8848’ Premieres in Atlanta, Showcasing Nepal’s Vertical Wonders

The Nepali documentary ‘Zero to 8848’ made its U.S. debut at AMC North DeKalb 16 in Atlanta on Saturday, drawing a packed audience eager to experience Nepal’s awe-inspiring journey from the lowland plains to the summit of the world. The premiere highlighted Nepal’s rich natural, cultural, and spiritual heritage, capturing the attention of both the Nepali diaspora and international guests.

The event brought together a distinguished gathering, including Senator Sheikh Rahman, Clarkston Mayor Beverly H. Burks, and iconic Nepali musician Om Bikram Bista, alongside representatives from Nepali organizations and community members across the United States.

A Unique Cinematic Concept

Directed by Niranjan Pandey and Balram Budhathoki, and conceptualized by journalist Prem Baniya, the film traces the world’s shortest elevation journey, from Kachankawal in Jhapa at 58 meters above sea level to the summit of Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) at 8,848 meters. Over four years of filming, the documentary captures Nepal’s extraordinary vertical diversity, blending adventure, culture, spirituality, and climate awareness.

The 106-minute film features celebrated mountaineers such as Everest summiteer Tendi Sherpa, adventurer Pushkar Shah, and renowned American climber Conrad Anker, weaving together compelling stories of human endurance and Nepal’s living heritage.

Promoting Eco-Tourism and Cultural Identity

Produced by Zero to 8848 Entertainment with a budget of approximately USD 1 million, the documentary goes beyond adventure filmmaking to promote Nepal’s eco-tourism, culture, and identity. By highlighting Nepal’s diverse landscapes and spiritual richness, the film encourages viewers to appreciate the country’s natural beauty and heritage while raising awareness about environmental conservation. Following the Atlanta premiere, the organizers announced plans for screenings across various U.S. states, culminating in a global release later this year.

A Historic Gathering for Nepalis Abroad

Calling the premiere “a historic gathering of Nepalis abroad,” the film team expressed gratitude to supporters and attendees. “We invite the world to witness Nepal’s unique journey from zero to the top of the world,” the team said, highlighting the documentary’s role in connecting Nepalis globally and promoting the country’s story to an international audience.

The Atlanta premiere marks a significant milestone for Nepali cinema, showing that stories rooted in the nation’s landscapes, culture, and adventurous spirit can resonate with audiences worldwide. Through ‘Zero to 8848’, Nepal’s journey from the plains of Jhapa to the summit of Everest becomes a cinematic experience that celebrates exploration, heritage, and inspiration.
