Nepal’s tourism industry is mourning the loss of esteemed tourism entrepreneur Basanta Raj Mishra, whose recent passing has left a profound impact on the sector. In a tribute organized by the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) Nepal Chapter, industry experts highlighted the void left by Mishra, noting his invaluable contributions to the growth and global recognition of Nepal’s tourism.
Former Secretary of Tourism, Dipendra Purush Dhakal, praised Mishra’s efforts to attract quality tourists and promote Nepal internationally, calling his contributions irreplaceable. “His passing is a great loss to the tourism sector,” said Dhakal. “He was instrumental in positioning Nepal on the global stage through international tourism fairs. Honoring his vision by advancing on the path he paved would be the truest tribute.”
Senior Director of Nepal Tourism Board, Nandini Lahe Thapa, expressed that the industry has lost a guiding figure. She emphasized the importance of continuing the initiatives Mishra championed to further enhance the dynamism and effectiveness of Nepal’s tourism sector.
Tourism entrepreneur Yogendra Shakya reflected on Mishra’s pioneering role in the industry, calling his passing a profound setback for Nepal’s tourism. Former PATA Nepal President R.R. Pandey recognized Mishra’s contributions to sustainable tourism and environmental conservation, while former President Bibhuti Chandra Thakur fondly recalled various dimensions of their professional journeys.
PATA Nepal Chapter President Khem Raj Lakai urged the younger generation to embrace Mishra’s legacy and continue promoting Nepal’s tourism on the global stage. The memorial service brought together tourism leaders and stakeholders to honor Mishra’s achievements and influence.
Mishra, who passed away on Kartik 4 at age 72, was Chairman of the Temple Tiger Group of Companies and had been active in the tourism industry since the 1970s. His dedication to raising Nepal’s international tourism profile and his influential role in sustainable tourism development remains a testament to his visionary impact.
