Nepal’s Trekking Association Seeks New Trails Amid Motor Road Expansion

The Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal (TAAN) is addressing the impact of haphazard road construction on traditional trekking routes by searching for new trails. This initiative responds to the degradation of existing paths, affecting trekkers both locally and internationally. TAAN, with nearly five decades in mountain tourism, is collaborating with local governments to identify and promote new trekking routes to market Nepal’s mountain tourism globally.

TAAN President Nilhari Bastola emphasized the need for new trails due to road encroachment on potential trekking paths. Efforts are underway to restore the Round Annapurna Trail, which has been significantly shortened due to road expansions, and to develop alternative routes. One such project is the ‘Boudha Himal–Himal Chuli Great Lake Circuit Trail,’ extending the trekking period on the Annapurna and Manaslu Circuits and spanning 18 days through various rural municipalities in Gorkha and Lamjung.

Additionally, TAAN is developing a new route from Umakunda Rural Municipality in Ramechhap to Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality in Solukhumbu, reviving a historic path to Everest. Another project, the ‘Everest Dudh Koshi Cultural Trail,’ aims to promote Mapya Dudh Koshi Rural Municipality as a tourist destination. In Kavrepalanchok, a route from Timal to Sailung via Chaunridhari Rural Municipality is also being established.

TAAN General Secretary Binod Sapkota announced progress on the ‘Gangajamuna Trisure Trail,’ which connects all seven wards of Gangajamuna Rural Municipality in Dhading, offering cultural and natural experiences.

Approximately 30% of tourists visiting Nepal engage in trekking. To promote new tourism destinations, TAAN is working with various organizations to develop the ‘Nepal Mandala Circuit Trail,’ linking locations around the Kathmandu Valley, including Shivapuri, Tarebhir, Mulkharka, and more.
