The charming town of Nerja, located along the eastern stretch of the Costa del Sol, is set to celebrate World Tourism Day on Friday, September 27. Known for its stunning caves and the iconic Balcón de Europa viewpoint, Nerja has planned a festive day filled with activities and recognitions.
The celebrations will kick off in the morning with guided tours available in both English and Spanish, allowing visitors to explore the town’s rich history and scenic beauty. At 1 PM, the awards ceremony will take place in the gardens of the Cueva de Nerja, where the town will honor several key contributors to its tourism industry. Notably, the beloved television, film, and theatre actor Miguel de Miguel will be named Nerja’s tourism ambassador.
This year’s tourism awards will be presented to various recipients, including Hotel Balcón de Europa, the late José Ángel Santiago—director of the first travel agency in Nerja—and businessman José Cruz Pozo. The Canal Sur program Salud al Día and athlete Juan Carlos Higuero will also be recognized for their contributions to promoting Nerja as a tourist destination.
In a statement, the town hall emphasized the significance of tourism as an “important economic engine,” highlighting the importance of celebrating the Día del Turista in conjunction with World Tourism Day.
The afternoon promises a lively atmosphere at the Balcón de Europa with flamenco shows, a flashmob performance by the Sentidos theatre group, and a special performance by the Nerja and Maro choirs, who will distribute white carnations to attendees.
The festivities will culminate with a concert by renowned singer Marta Sánchez at 10 PM on Plaza de España, followed by a DJ set by Toulalán. To conclude the celebration, a dazzling fireworks display will light up the night sky, marking a memorable celebration of Nerja’s tourism and culture.
