The Swyambhu Management and Conservation Grand Committee has elected a new executive committee, with Bhikxu Dharmamurti Mahasthavir appointed as the chairman. This marks his second term in this leadership role.
Chairman Dharmamurti is the former vice president of the All Nepal Bhikxu Federation and has served as an advisor to several international Buddhist organizations. He is known for his significant contributions to promoting Buddhist literature and philosophy on an international level.
The general assembly has also elected other key members to the executive committee. Sureshbabu Yonjan Lama and Yojes Bajracharya have been chosen as vice-chairpersons, Ashokkaji Buddhacharya as general secretary, Chandra Buddhacharya as secretary, Tejratna Tamrakar as treasurer, and Professor Dr. Keshav Shrestha as deputy treasurer. Raju Lama and Gautam Shakya have been selected as members of the committee.
In his address, the newly elected chairman Dharmamurti emphasized that the committee, under the direction of the Department of Archaeology, will work to preserve the tangible and intangible heritage of the Swyambhu World Heritage Site. He expressed his commitment to developing Swyambhu as a sacred pilgrimage site.
The committee has been coordinating with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, as well as the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and other organizations, to ensure the restoration and preservation of this cultural site. They have also managed religious festivals, processions, and various religious events in the area.
In addition to its conservation efforts, the committee provides historical insights to both national and international tourists and devotees visiting Swyambhu. It continues to conduct regular rituals, promote the heritage, and safeguard the surrounding forest through reforestation and environmental preservation activities.
