Newly Blacktopped Fikkal-Nayabazaar Road Boosts Tourism in Ilam

The recent blacktopping of the Fikkal-Nayabazaar road, part of the Fikkal-Jogmai-Nayabazaar-Dudhang road section in Ilam, is set to significantly enhance tourism in the region. The 20-kilometer stretch from Barbote, Fikkal of Suryodaya Municipality-9 to Nayabazaar of Maijogmai Rural Municipality-1 has been upgraded, transforming what was once a dilapidated road into a smooth, accessible route for travelers.

Funded by the Koshi Province government, the project was completed for Rs 538.938 million. Engineer Birendra Lama from the Infrastructure Development Office in Bhadrapur, Jhapa, confirmed that DBST (Double Bituminous Surface Treatment) technology was employed to ensure durability and quality. The blacktopping included paving 800 meters of particularly challenging terrain, and additional safety measures such as kilometer posts and safety bars have been installed.

The completion of this project, although delayed due to a massive flood in 2077 BS, marks a significant milestone in improving local infrastructure. Originally scheduled for completion in 2079 BS, the project faced setbacks but was successfully finished with extended deadlines. Dilliram Khanal, a representative of the contractor company, acknowledged the challenges but expressed satisfaction with the road’s current state.

This newly blacktopped road is expected to greatly facilitate daily travel for the residents of Gorkhe in Suryodaya Municipality and Jogmai, Nayabazaar, and Pyang in Maijogmai Rural Municipality. The improved road conditions are anticipated to boost tourism by making the scenic and culturally rich areas of Ilam more accessible to both domestic and international visitors.

With easier travel, tourists can now explore the lush tea gardens, picturesque landscapes, and cultural heritage sites that Ilam offers. This development is poised to enhance the local economy by attracting more tourists, thereby benefiting local businesses and promoting sustainable tourism in the region.
