Nhyuha Pokhari in Lalitpur Awaits Urgent Preservation Amidst Budget Constraints

Despite efforts by the Lalitpur Metropolitan City (LMC) to reconstruct and preserve historical heritage sites, several such sites remain in urgent need of attention. Nhyuha Pokhari, a historic pond located in LMC-5, is one such heritage that has yet to see full restoration and promotion.

Following the local elections in 2074 BS, residents, and representatives initiated a clean-up campaign at Nhyuha Pokhari, signaling a strong community interest in its preservation. A master plan was introduced in 2076 BS to protect the pond; however, progress has been hindered by budgetary constraints, according to LMC-5 Ward Chair Bikashman Shrestha.

Shrestha acknowledged the ongoing challenges, stating, “We have initiated conservation works on this historic pond. Although we are making some progress, technical issues have delayed the conservation efforts.”

Local resident Rajbhai Deula reflected on the pond’s historical significance, recalling childhood memories of swimming in its waters. He noted that the pond had dried up for a significant period but has recently been refilled with water. However, he expressed concerns over the current state of the pond, pointing out that the water is contaminated and the surface is largely covered by unwanted grasses.

Deula emphasized the potential of Nhyuha Pokhari to enhance the beauty of the Lagankhel area if it were properly preserved and promoted. He urged the LMC to take immediate action to address the preservation needs of the pond.

The situation at Nhyuha Pokhari highlights the broader challenges facing heritage conservation in Lalitpur, where budget limitations and technical issues continue to stall crucial restoration projects.
