Government Approves Land Acquisition for Kathmandu-Terai/Madhes Fast Track, Paving the Way for Enhanced Tourism Connectivity

The government has taken a significant step toward improving connectivity and boosting tourism by approving land acquisition in Makawanpur district for the Kathmandu-Terai/Madhes Fast Track project. This strategic infrastructure development is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing access to key tourism destinations in Nepal.

In a cabinet meeting held on Thursday, the government granted permission to acquire approximately 33,975 square feet of land in Makawanpur, according to the government spokesperson and Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung. The fast track, once completed, is anticipated to significantly reduce travel time between Kathmandu and the southern plains, making it easier for tourists to explore the diverse cultural and natural attractions in the Terai/Madhes region.

In addition to the fast-track project, the cabinet also approved land acquisition for the Nepal Oil Corporation Limited, allowing the acquisition of around five bighas of land in Jitpur Simara Sub-Metropolitan City. This move is expected to support the infrastructure needed for the fast track and other related projects.

Further highlighting the government’s focus on international cooperation in tourism and cultural exchange, the cabinet granted prior permission for Lalitpur Metropolitan City to establish a sister-city relationship with Cheorwon-gun City in South Korea. This partnership is likely to enhance cultural ties and promote tourism between the two cities, encouraging more visitors to explore the historical and cultural heritage of Lalitpur.

Moreover, the cabinet lifted the ban on TikTok under certain conditions, a decision that could have implications for digital marketing and tourism promotion. Social media platforms like TikTok play a vital role in showcasing Nepal’s tourist attractions to a global audience, and this decision is seen as a step towards leveraging digital tools for tourism growth.

The government also approved the participation of key officials in international conferences that align with Nepal’s tourism and development goals. Vice-Chairperson of the National Planning Commission, Prof. Dr. Shiva Raj Adhikari, will attend the ‘Multidimensional Poverty Peer Network’ meeting in Uzbekistan, while Minister for Women, Children, and Senior Citizen, Nawal Kishor Sah Sudi, and Minister for Forest and Environment, Ain Bahadur Shahi, will participate in global forums in Colombia and Brazil, respectively.

These decisions underscore the government’s commitment to enhancing infrastructure, fostering international partnerships, and utilizing digital platforms to boost tourism in Nepal. The development of the Kathmandu-Terai/Madhes Fast Track is particularly anticipated to open up new tourism opportunities, connecting the capital with the rich cultural and natural landscapes of the Tarai region more efficiently.
