NMLA Marks 9th Foundation Day Alongside First International Mountain Leader Day 2026 in Historic Celebration

The 9th Foundation Day of the Nepal Mountain Leader Association (NMLA) is currently being observed alongside a historic milestone, the first-ever International Mountain Leader Day (NMLA/IML Day 2026). The joint celebration marks a significant moment for Nepal’s mountain tourism sector, bringing together mountain leaders, tourism professionals, policymakers, and key stakeholders. The event highlights the growing importance of professional mountain leadership in shaping Himalayan tourism, strengthening climate awareness, and advancing sustainable mountain development practices across Nepal and beyond.

Grand Celebration Held in Kathmandu

The main program was held at Mandala Norling Lords Prime Hotel in Maharajgunj, Kathmandu, where NMLA formally celebrated its 9th Foundation Day. The event showcased the association’s journey in institutionalizing mountain leadership as a professional career in Nepal and aligning it with international standards. Speakers highlighted how Nepal has emerged as a key player in global mountain tourism through structured training, certification, and international collaboration in the field of mountain leadership.

Leadership Emphasizes Professional Growth and Global Recognition

Addressing the program, NMLA President Dawa Tashi Sherpa stated that the association was established with the vision of organizing and professionalizing trekking and mountain guiding services in Nepal. He explained that over the past nine years, NMLA has played a crucial role in enhancing the capacity of mountain leaders, developing professional standards, and achieving international recognition for Nepal’s mountain tourism workforce. Sherpa also expressed gratitude to all individuals and institutions that supported Nepal’s successful journey toward becoming a full member of the Union of International Mountain Leader Associations (UIMLA), calling it a historic achievement for the country.

Mountain Leader Profession and Its Importance in Tourism

Clarifying the role of mountain leaders, President Sherpa described them as trained and certified professionals responsible for leading and managing trekking and non-technical mountain journeys. He emphasized that mountain leaders are different from mountain guides, as guides primarily handle technical climbing expeditions, while mountain leaders provide leadership in both technical and non-technical trekking and expedition environments.

Mountain leaders are trained in group management, navigation, weather forecasting, first aid, rescue coordination, environmental conservation, and cultural interpretation. Their role is essential in ensuring safe, responsible, and high-quality tourism experiences in Himalayan regions.

Journey from Formation to International Recognition

The concept of structured mountain leadership education in Nepal began in 2015 through the initiative of experienced Nepali mountaineers. The Nepal Mountain Leader Association was officially registered on June 21, 2017, under the Government of Nepal.

Following its establishment, the association began implementing training programs based on UIMLA standards in collaboration with the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). A major milestone was achieved on November 2, 2024, when Nepal obtained full membership in UIMLA, officially entering the global mountain leadership framework.

Nepal’s Growing Pool of Certified Mountain Leaders

According to the association, more than 50 internationally certified Mountain Leaders (IML) have already been produced in Nepal. These professionals are actively contributing to the country’s trekking and adventure tourism industry.

NMLA continues to work with NMA and other organizations to expand training programs, enhance technical skills, and produce globally competitive mountain leaders who can ensure safety, sustainability, and professionalism in Himalayan tourism.

Establishment of Journalism Award for Mountain Tourism Promotion

During the event, NMLA announced the establishment of the “Mountain Leader Journalism Award” to recognize journalists, media professionals, and organizations contributing to the promotion and awareness of mountain leadership and tourism. The award aims to highlight the role of media in promoting safe trekking practices, professional guiding systems, and sustainable tourism development in Nepal and internationally.

A Certified Professional for Safe Himalayan Travel

A Mountain Leader is a certified professional trained to guide and manage trekking and mountaineering activities safely. They are responsible for ensuring group safety, navigation, weather assessment, first aid, emergency response, environmental protection, and cultural interpretation. Unlike mountain guides who focus on technical climbing expeditions, mountain leaders specialize in both trekking and non-technical mountain journeys. Their work ensures safe, informed, and environmentally responsible tourism experiences.

Nepal’s Professional Mountain Leader Organization

The Nepal Mountain Leader Association (NMLA) is the official professional body representing mountain leaders in Nepal. It works to develop internationally standardized training, promote safe and sustainable tourism, and support the professional growth of mountain leaders.

NMLA serves as Nepal’s representative to UIMLA and collaborates with the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) in producing certified International Mountain Leaders. Its key objectives include capacity building, safety promotion, environmental protection, and strengthening Nepal’s position in global mountain tourism.

Global Umbrella Organization for Mountain Leaders

The Union of International Mountain Leader Associations (UIMLA) is the international governing body for Mountain Leaders worldwide. Established in 2004 and headquartered in Switzerland, UIMLA sets global standards for training, certification, and professional conduct. It currently has 28 full member countries, including Nepal. UIMLA promotes safety, quality, and sustainability in mountain tourism and ensures consistent professional standards across member nations.

Significance of International Mountain Leader Day

June 21, observed as International Mountain Leader Day, aims to promote awareness about the profession, recognize the contribution of mountain leaders, and highlight Nepal’s achievement in joining UIMLA. The day also serves to strengthen cooperation among stakeholders, promote sustainable tourism, and honor professionals contributing to safe and responsible mountain tourism.

The joint celebration of NMLA’s 9th Foundation Day and the first International Mountain Leader Day 2026 marks a historic milestone for Nepal’s mountain tourism sector. It reflects the country’s growing global recognition in professional mountain leadership and its commitment to safe, sustainable, and high-quality Himalayan tourism.
