NTB Donates Emergency Rescue Equipment to HRA

The Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) has taken a significant step to enhance the safety of climbers and mountain tourists by providing emergency rescue equipment to the Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA). The handover ceremony took place on Thursday at the NTB office in Bhrikuti Mandap, aiming to support rescue operations in the Everest and Annapurna regions, two of Nepal’s most popular mountain tourism destinations.

This initiative reflects NTB’s continued commitment to ensuring the safety of visitors to the Himalayas while reinforcing sustainable and responsible tourism practices. By equipping the HRA with modern rescue gear, NTB aims to strengthen emergency preparedness in some of the world’s most challenging and high-altitude trekking and climbing environments.

NTB Leadership Highlights Safety as a Priority

At the handover ceremony, NTB Chief Executive Officer Deepak Raj Joshi emphasized that the board remains dedicated to the safety of mountain tourists and climbers. “Nepal’s Himalayas are among the world’s greatest attractions. Ensuring the safety of climbers and trekkers who visit these regions is a top priority for the Nepal Tourism Board. Our collaboration with the Himalayan Rescue Association aligns closely with our mission to sustain Himalayan tourism responsibly,” Joshi stated.

Board member Narendra Dev Bhatt noted that rescue efforts go beyond emergency management, serving as a crucial mechanism for enhancing Nepal’s credibility as a safe and reliable mountain tourism destination. He also highlighted plans to further strengthen risk management and rescue coordination in the coming years.

Another board member, Rishi Bhandari, stressed that such collaborations not only improve safety but also foster environmental awareness in Himalayan regions. “Supporting rescue operations helps promote responsible tourism and encourages visitors to respect both the natural and cultural heritage of Nepal’s high-altitude areas,” he said.

HRA Acknowledges NTB Support

Receiving the equipment, HRA President Dambar Parajuli expressed gratitude to NTB for its continued support. “Operating in extreme environments such as Everest and Annapurna requires specialized rescue equipment. This contribution from the Nepal Tourism Board will significantly enhance our efficiency and response time during emergencies,” Parajuli stated.

The ceremony saw participation from senior officials of NTB, including Hikmat Singh Ayer, Senior Officer, and Archana KC, Senior Manager, as well as key figures from HRA, including CEO Govinda Basyal and other association officials. The program was facilitated by NTB Senior Officer Siddhartha Bishwokarma and was attended by professionals actively involved in mountain tourism.

Emergency Equipment Provided

As part of the initiative, NTB donated a comprehensive set of emergency and rescue tools designed to support high-altitude operations. The equipment included:

  • 20 carabiners
  • 4 mechanical ascenders
  • 5 descenders
  • 4 pulleys
  • 5 slings
  • 5 ice screws and pickets
  • 4 belay devices
  • 4 anchors
  • 5 sleeping bags

This extensive set of gear is expected to bolster HRA’s ability to conduct rapid and safe rescues in some of the most rugged and dangerous trekking and climbing areas in the world.

Promoting Safe and Responsible Himalayan Tourism

The Nepal Tourism Board reiterated its long-term commitment to improving rescue infrastructure and tourist safety across Nepal’s Himalayan regions. Future plans include expanding cooperation with private sector partners and local communities to ensure that emergency response mechanisms are not only effective but also integrated into broader tourism development strategies.

By strengthening HRA’s operational capacity, NTB aims to offer greater reassurance to international climbers and trekkers, thereby enhancing Nepal’s reputation as a safe and well-prepared mountain tourism destination. The board also highlighted the importance of linking rescue preparedness with environmental and cultural stewardship, ensuring that the growth of adventure tourism in Nepal is both sustainable and responsible.

Commitment to High-Quality Mountain Tourism

With the provision of this vital rescue equipment, the Nepal Tourism Board continues to reinforce the Himalayas as a safe, attractive, and environmentally conscious tourism destination. The initiative not only improves emergency response capabilities but also demonstrates Nepal’s proactive role in promoting responsible adventure tourism, combining safety, sustainability, and community engagement in one comprehensive approach. NTB’s support underscores the importance of collaboration between government agencies and specialized organizations like HRA to protect the lives of visitors while preserving the unique beauty and cultural significance of Nepal’s mountainous regions.
