Police Honored for Heroic Rescue Efforts in Nuwakot Helicopter Crash

In recognition of their bravery and effective response, ten police officers have been awarded for their role in the rescue operation following the recent helicopter crash in Nuwakot. The incident occurred on July 7, 2024, when an Air Dynasty helicopter crashed in Surya Chaur, Shivpuri Rural Municipality-7.

According to Shantiraj Koirala, Chief of the District Police Office, Nuwakot, the officers were honored for their commendable efforts from the moment they received news of the crash until the collection of debris from the site. The police were recognized for extinguishing the fire on the helicopter, conducting swift and courageous rescue operations to retrieve the victims’ bodies, and coordinating effectively with other agencies. They also ensured the reliable security of scattered personal belongings and helicopter parts.

The honored officers include Police Havildar Ashbahadur Gurung, Rajan Khatri, and Deependra Pandit, along with Assistant Police Havildars Suvas Khatri, Kamal Sapkota, and Ganesh Prasad Tiwari. Police personnel Turbahadur Shahi, Ashok Gaha, Sangam Koiri, and Bijan Gurung were also acknowledged for their contributions to the rescue, coordination, and security efforts. Each officer received a certificate of appreciation and a cash reward, with their records to be included in the official archives of the National Library under the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration.

Chief Koirala noted, “The commendable contribution made by the police during this emergency will serve as an inspiration and motivation for other officers. Such recognition is expected to yield positive results in future operations.”

The helicopter, which took off from Tribhuvan International Airport heading to Syafrubesi in Rasuwa, crashed in Surya Chaur, Shivpuri Rural Municipality-7. The crash resulted in the deaths of Captain Arun Mall and four passengers, who were Chinese nationals.
