Hotels Race to Build Infrastructure Along the Pilgrim Trail for Janai Purnima
Along the arduous route to Gosaikunda, which winds through Khanti Deurali, Dimsa, Chandanbari, and Lauribinayak before finally reaching the lake itself, more than 25 hotels are working at a rapid pace to get ready in time. According to Renjan Nima Tamang, chairperson of the Gosaikunda Route Hotel Entrepreneurs’ Association, these establishments are simultaneously constructing waiting shelters (pratikshalaya) and toilet facilities, while also managing lodging arrangements for the expected surge of devotees. This is no small undertaking given the remote, high-altitude terrain, where every piece of construction material and every sack of supplies must be carried in by porters or mules over difficult mountain trails.
Food Supplies Being Ferried to the Mountains during Janai Purnima
Feeding thousands of pilgrims at an elevation where nothing grows locally is a logistical challenge in itself. Hotel operators are currently transporting essential food items including lentils (dal), rice, cooking oil, salt, and spices up the mountain trails to ensure that no pilgrim goes hungry during their spiritual journey. These supplies are being stockpiled well in advance, since the narrow trails become congested and travel time increases dramatically once the fair begins and pilgrim traffic peaks.
Over 200 Temporary Shelters Being Built for Pilgrims
Perhaps the most striking preparation effort is the construction of more than 200 tharpu, or temporary huts, being built specifically to house the influx of pilgrims.
Given that Gosaikunda’s permanent lodges cannot possibly accommodate the sheer volume of devotees who arrive for the festival, these makeshift shelters are considered essential to prevent overcrowding and ensure that no pilgrim is left without a place to rest in the cold mountain nights.
National Park Authority Orders Toilet Facilities at Every Shelter
In a significant directive aimed at improving sanitation standards during the mass gathering, the Langtang National Park office has formally requested and effectively mandated that hotel entrepreneurs arrange toilet facilities at every single tharpu being constructed. This move comes as authorities look to avoid the sanitation crises that have plagued similar high-altitude religious gatherings in the past, where inadequate toilet infrastructure has led to environmental contamination of the fragile alpine ecosystem surrounding the sacred lake.
