Preservation Efforts for Traditional Limbu Dance (Yalang) Amidst Cultural Crisis

The traditional Limbu (Yakthung) dance known as “Dhan Nach” or “Yalang” is facing a crisis due to a lack of preservation efforts and declining interest among the younger generation. Traditionally performed during special occasions by the Limbu community, this dance is at risk of disappearing as modern influences and reduced engagement from younger generations threaten its survival.

To revive and promote the dance, the Limbu community organized a grand display of Dhan Nach in Phungling, the district headquarters of Taplejung, today. The event, held during the Newar community’s Lakhe Festival, saw enthusiastic participation from people of all ages, from teenagers to the elderly.

The event, hosted by Yakthung Chumlung Taplejung, featured participants performing in a traditional circle and aligned formation, singing Limbu folk songs in the “Juhari” style. Dhan Nach is not only popular within the Limbu community but also among other communities, especially during weddings, fairs, and festivals.

Dhan Nach has historically played a vital role in strengthening social bonds within the Limbu community and has served as a medium for romantic exchanges between young men and women. However, experts note that the dance is at risk of vanishing due to the younger generation’s decreasing interest in preserving traditional culture.

Bhadra Bokhim, President of the Nepal Indigenous Nationalities Federation, Taplejung District Coordination Council, attributes the crisis to Western cultural influences and the declining interest among youth. “There is a need to raise awareness among the younger generation about the importance of preserving our traditional culture,” he stated.

Hanmaya Lechharbo Limbu, District President of the Yakthung Cultural Council, emphasized the importance of Dhan Nach and expressed concern that the younger generation’s fascination with modernity is jeopardizing traditional customs. She believes that such cultural programs can help preserve and strengthen cultural heritage.

Organizations like Kirat Yakthung Chumlung and the Yakthung Cultural Council have been working to protect cultural heritage, but more efforts are needed to institutionalize these preservation initiatives. Dhan Nach not only represents cultural pride but also conveys a message of social unity. It is crucial that preservation efforts continue to ensure that this traditional dance maintains its identity.
