President Ramchandra Paudel has emphasized Nepal’s immense potential in sports tourism, stating that the country’s geographical diversity and cultural richness create an ideal environment for international sporting events, particularly long-distance running and marathons.
During a special meeting held at the Office of the President, Shital Niwas, with officials from the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AIMS), President Paudel highlighted how Nepal’s unique landscapes, from the Himalayan foothills to the southern plains, can offer unforgettable experiences to adventure runners and tourists alike.
“Nepal has already hosted successful ultramarathons near Mount Everest and long-distance runs in the western Tarai region, including Nepalgunj. These events reflect our nation’s topographical advantages and show how distance running can open new doors for sports tourism,” President Paudel said, according to his personal secretariat. He added, “We hope international organizations like AIMS will continue to promote Nepal as a destination for sports tourism.”

Promoting Sports as a Tool for Peace and Development
President Paudel also underscored the broader significance of sports in fostering global peace, fraternity, and mutual understanding. He expressed particular admiration for the role of running culture in promoting health, encouraging healthy competition, and building a more prosperous society.
“Sports play a vital role in enhancing global harmony, and within that, the culture of marathon running contributes not only to physical well-being but also to fostering social cohesion and discipline,” he noted.
The President reaffirmed Nepal’s commitment to advancing sports infrastructure and athlete development. He mentioned that the Government of Nepal has been increasing investment in the sports sector annually and welcomed the private sector’s growing involvement in supporting sports initiatives.

Nepal Hosts AIMS Board Meeting
President Paudel expressed gratitude to AIMS for selecting Nepal as the host country for its recent board meeting. He viewed the decision as an acknowledgment of Nepal’s growing reputation as a viable destination for international sports events, particularly marathons.
“I would like to thank AIMS for choosing Nepal to hold this important gathering. It is a matter of pride for us, and we hope this meeting will help strengthen Nepal’s position in the global sports tourism map,” President Paudel said.

International Collaboration and Future Opportunities
The President’s remarks come at a time when Nepal is actively seeking to expand its profile in the global sports arena. With increasing participation in trail races, adventure marathons, and high-altitude sporting events, Nepal has emerged as a unique and promising destination for sports travelers.
Nepal’s diverse elevation, from sea level plains to the world’s highest mountains, makes it uniquely suited for hosting a wide range of athletic events that appeal to both amateur and professional athletes. Experts believe that such events can drive tourism growth, create employment, and strengthen Nepal’s global branding.
Officials from AIMS also expressed their appreciation for Nepal’s warm hospitality and showed interest in exploring more opportunities to collaborate in organizing future international marathons and sports events across the country.
As Nepal continues to integrate sports and tourism as a tool for national development, the government’s proactive approach, combined with international partnerships, signals a hopeful trajectory for the nation’s sports tourism landscape.
