Purnima Shrestha, a world record-holding mountaineer, has been appointed as a ‘Goodwill Ambassador’ by the French Embassy in Nepal in recognition of her achievements in mountaineering. This appointment comes ahead of the 75th anniversary of the first successful ascent of Annapurna I, which will be celebrated on June 3.

In her new role, Shrestha will actively participate in various events and programs organized by the French Embassy, all related to the Annapurna mountain. These include showcasing photographs of Annapurna, sharing personal anecdotes about the mountain, and engaging in discussions to highlight its historical significance.

Shrestha expressed her honor in being part of the initiative to promote environmental conservation and sustainable mountain tourism. She emphasized the importance of preserving the legacy of mountaineering while encouraging responsible practices in the region.

“The mountains represent not just our courage, but also our responsibility to nature and future generations,” Shrestha remarked, underscoring the deep connection between mountaineering and environmental stewardship. In addition to her new ambassadorial role, Shrestha has previously made successful ascents of Mount Annapurna, further solidifying her expertise and passion for the mountains.
