Rara Lake Tragedy Strikes: Tourist Victim of Altitude Sickness

A domestic tourist visiting Rara, one of Nepal’s major tourist destinations, has passed away. Bhuvan Bishwakarma, 54, from Dhulikhel Municipality-10 in Kavre, died this morning due to altitude sickness, according to Chief District Officer Kamal Prasad Pandey.

Dr. Nakul Shahi from the district hospital in Mugu reported that Bishwakarma had arrived at the hospital around 9 p.m. on Sunday, experiencing difficulty breathing. After a check-up, it was found that he had low oxygen levels, and the hospital advised him to stay for observation. However, he refused and returned to his accommodation in Salleri. His friends later brought him back by ambulance around 6 a.m. on Monday, but he was already dead when they reached the hospital.

According to Dr. Shahi, Bishwakarma had obesity and was likely a long-term asthma patient. The lack of oxygen in the high-altitude, cold environment, combined with the snowfall, caused him to suffer from altitude sickness and eventually led to a cardiac pulmonary arrest. On Sunday, Bishwakarma was part of a 25-person group that had traveled to Rara and the surrounding lake area.
