Ramgram Stupa Emerges as Popular Destination for Domestic and International Tourists

The Ramgram Stupa in Uyijani, Ramgram Municipality, is renowned globally as the only complete relic of Lord Buddha made entirely of metal. In recent years, it has increasingly become a top choice for both domestic and international tourists seeking spiritual and cultural experiences.

According to Arvind Chaudhary, Tourism Assistant at the Ramgram Stupa Development Fund, from January 1 to the end of October 2025, a total of 17,417 tourists visited the stupa. He noted that tourist numbers are on the rise compared to the previous year. “During the same period last year, the stupa saw 3,738 fewer visitors,” Chaudhary said, highlighting the growing popularity of the site.

International Tourist Arrivals on the Rise

Of the total international visitors, Thailand accounted for the largest share, with 6,668 tourists visiting Ramgram Stupa. Other international visitors came from 36 countries, including Uganda, which had the smallest representation with only one visitor, Chaudhary said. Among domestic tourists, the highest number came from Upper Mustang, with 2,379 visitors during the reporting period.

The increasing influx of tourists has not only promoted Ramgram Stupa as a key heritage and spiritual site but has also boosted local income and employment opportunities, benefiting communities in the surrounding area.

Cultural and Economic Significance

The Ramgram Stupa holds immense cultural and historical significance as the sole complete relic of Lord Buddha in the world, attracting researchers, pilgrims, and tourists alike. Its growing popularity reflects a rising interest in Nepal’s Buddhist heritage, while simultaneously supporting the local economy through tourism-related services such as guides, transport, and hospitality.

Local residents have welcomed the rising tourist numbers, noting that increased visitor footfall has created employment opportunities and provided a steady source of income for families dependent on tourism. The stupa’s spiritual and historical importance combined with improved visitor facilities has positioned it as a must-visit destination in Nepal’s Lumbini Province.

Looking Ahead

Tourism authorities aim to continue promoting Ramgram Stupa as a key cultural and spiritual destination. With rising international interest and steadily increasing domestic visitors, stakeholders believe further development and marketing of the site could transform the area into a prime pilgrimage and heritage tourism hub in Nepal.

The development of infrastructure, guided tours, and visitor facilities is expected to enhance the overall tourist experience, encouraging longer stays and repeat visits. Such initiatives are likely to sustain local livelihoods while showcasing Nepal’s unique Buddhist heritage to the world.
