Reconstruction of Historic Degu Taleju Temple in Patan Durbar Square Completed

The Degu Taleju Temple, located in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Patan Durbar Square, has been successfully reconstructed after being reduced to ruins by the devastating earthquake nine years ago.

According to Leela Pathak, Chief of the Patan Monument Preservation and Durbar Care Office, the exterior restoration of the historic Degu Taleju Temple has been completed, while work on the interior is ongoing. Pathak noted that once the interior is finished, a formal inauguration will take place with a ceremonial “Kshama Puja” (forgiveness worship). He added, “The temple, dating back to the Malla period, has been rebuilt in its original architectural style.”

The Degu Taleju Temple, known as the largest and tallest temple in Lalitpur, received financial support of NPR 130 million from the Japanese government for its reconstruction. Most of the heritage structures in Lalitpur have been fully restored, while a few are still under construction.
