Sagarmatha National Park Issues Urgent Ban on Tourist-Horse Rides to Protect Core Zone’s Ecosystem

Sagarmatha National Park has announced an immediate ban on using horses to carry tourists within its core area, citing ecological concerns. Issued in a notice on Friday, the park authority has given private horse owners a seven-day deadline to remove their horses from sensitive regions within the park.

Tourist horseback rides are common in areas like Larcha Dovan, Lobuche, Thukla, and Gorakshep, where private owners often use horses for transport. However, the park administration has expressed concerns over the impact of these activities on the area’s delicate ecosystem. Horse movement and grazing are reportedly affecting local wildlife, vegetation, and the region’s fragile terrain.

The directive underlines the need to prioritize environmental preservation in one of Nepal’s most treasured natural landscapes, reinforcing Sagarmatha National Park’s commitment to sustainable tourism and conservation.

Sagarmatha National Park has warned the public not to move, graze, or shelter domestic horses within the park without prior permission. The area is a popular trekking route, frequented by hikers and nature enthusiasts.
