Sagarmatha National Park Unveils Bold Proposal to Ban Helicopter Flights in Upper Syangboche Region

Sagarmatha National Park has proposed a ban on commercial helicopter flights above Syangboche in Solukhumbu, aiming to reduce noise pollution and protect wildlife. In a letter to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal (CAAN), the park’s management committee expressed concerns over the environmental impact of the high volume of daily flights.

The proposal, endorsed during a joint meeting on Thursday involving representatives from Sagarmatha National Park, the Bhagat Prasad Gula battalion, and the Buffer Zone Management Committee, highlights the detrimental effects of helicopter activity. The constant noise pollution has reportedly disturbed wildlife habits and behaviors, disrupting the natural balance within the core protected area.

Local communities have also voiced concerns over the extensive use of helicopters, noting its adverse effects on job opportunities in traditional tourism sectors. If implemented, the proposed restrictions would help mitigate these issues, promoting sustainable tourism practices in the Sagarmatha region.
