In an impressive showcase of creativity, artisans in Gulmi have turned discarded rhododendron wood into stunning sculptures, surprising many who underestimated the potential of such materials. The wood, which was once left to decay in the forests, has now been transformed into beautifully designed statues, capturing the essence of the Satyavati region.
The Satyavati area, recognized for its natural beauty, has gained further prominence in tourism thanks to the recent workshop focused on wood sculpture and painting, organized by the Satyavati Rural Municipality. The ten-day event has helped enhance the identity of the region and promoted its unique cultural heritage.
According to Tikaram Pandey, Chairman of the Satyavati Rural Municipality, the workshop aimed to support the promotion of Satyavati as a significant religious and tourist destination. He expressed confidence that the initiative would boost rural tourism connected to the identity of the Satyavati region.
Under the guidance of prominent sculptors and painters from Satyavati, over two dozen sculptures and paintings were created, reflecting the cultural, natural, and spiritual sentiments of the area. Senior sculptor Yam Bahadur Thapa highlighted the significance of using rhododendron wood, which symbolizes the rich cultural heritage of Satyavati.
The workshop was offered free of charge and saw the participation of skilled artisans who have made their mark both domestically and internationally. Senior sculptors Bhuwan Thapa Magar, Yam Bahadur Thapa, and Narendra Bhandari led the initiative to create sculptures and paintings to foster tourism development in Satyavati.
The artists produced sculptures and images representing local temples and figures from the community, including former village chairpersons. With support from the Tourism Board and the municipality, more than NPR 5.8 million was invested last year in developing infrastructure in the area, including picnic spots, restrooms, and parks.
Recognized as one of Nepal’s 101 new tourist destinations, Satyavati is gaining traction as a key attraction. During the workshop, the municipality honored the participating sculptors and painters, celebrating the collective effort to elevate Satyavati’s artistic and cultural significance. A total of 23 esteemed sculptors and painters participated in the event, showcasing their talents and contributing to the region’s growth as a tourist hub.
