New York Hosts Vital Discussion on Climate Change: Save The Himalayas, Save The Earth

An interactive program titled “Save the Himalayas, Save the Earth” was successfully held in New York, jointly organized by the Parbat Sports Association New York and the Sathsathai Foundation.

During the event, Chairman of the Press Council Nepal, Bal Krishna Basnet, emphasized the need for media to give special coverage to climate change issues. Held in Jackson Heights City, New York, the program saw the participation of journalists, mountaineers, and other stakeholders.

Basnet stated, “The impacts of climate change on our mountains are becoming increasingly evident. The once bright, white, and shining peaks are turning black. The media must increase coverage to draw global attention to this issue.”

The event’s chief guest, Chairman Basnet, was warmly welcomed by Temba Sherpa, Chairman of Sherpa Kyidug and advisor to the Parbat Sports Association New York. Distinguished personalities such as senior journalist Babita Basnet, Vice President of the Nepal Federation of Journalists Neetu Pandit, and others, including journalists Anita Bindu, Kamala Panthi, writer Neelam Karki Niharika, and Prajita Karki, President of Sathsathai Foundation, also attended the event.

General Secretary of the Association, Sanjog Acharya, who hosted the program, expressed his happiness in discussing new topics that media should highlight. Guest speakers shared insights on maintaining environmental balance on Earth and the necessary efforts to protect Nepal’s mountains.

Prajita Karki, President of the Sathsathai Foundation, presented her key views on how sustainable tourism development and Himalayan conservation can be advanced at the community level. She stressed that Nepal’s mountains are a global heritage, and their protection requires collective efforts.

Senior journalist Babita Basnet highlighted the crisis Nepal’s mountains face due to climate change and called for international-level action for their long-term preservation. She also appreciated Sathsathai Foundation for its grassroots initiatives on such crucial issues.

Participants emphasized the need for all sectors to work together in promoting tourism, uplifting local communities economically, and ensuring the long-term conservation of the Himalayas. The program conveyed the message that Nepal’s mountains are not just national treasures but also play a vital role in maintaining the Earth’s environmental balance, making their conservation a shared responsibility.
