Shuklaphanta National Park Suffers Damage from Continuous Rainfall

Shuklaphanta National Park has been significantly affected by floods following incessant rainfall. The overflow of the Chaudhar River has caused severe flooding within the park, leading to the deaths of several wildlife and extensive damage to physical structures, according to Conservation Officer Manoj Aire.

The areas of Lalpani, Radhapur, and Mohanpur, which are adjacent to the Chaudhar River, experienced severe flooding. “Four hog deer and one chital were found dead due to the flooding,” stated Officer Aire. He further explained, “The floodwaters from the Chaudhar River have impacted the wildlife in the riverine areas, and we have found some animals dead.”

The heavy flooding has also washed away more than a dozen wooden and concrete bridges within the park. “The bridges on tourist paths have been swept away,” noted Officer Air, “which has created difficulties for monitoring and patrolling.” The loss of bridges has completely obstructed the main access route to the park through Barkola.

Fortunately, the Mahakali River did not overflow into the park this time, sparing the habitat of the swamp deer. However, the Krishna Sars protected area in Hirapur within the park has sustained damage due to the flooding. Additionally, the park’s office and residential areas were submerged, resulting in soaked files and other materials, as reported by Officer Aire.
