Singjema Lake, located at an altitude of 4,700 meters in the Phaktanglung rural municipality, is gradually becoming a sought-after tourism destination. This alpine lake, situated a day’s trek from the nearby settlement of Olangchungola, is known for its stunning natural beauty and spiritual significance.
Nestled in an area rich in biodiversity, Singjema Lake has recently gained popularity through social media exposure, attracting both domestic and international visitors. Chheten Lama, the Ward Chairman of Phaktanglung rural municipality-7, anticipates an increase in tourist numbers during the upcoming Dashain and Tihar festivals, which mark early autumn in Nepal.
The accessibility to the lake has improved significantly thanks to road connectivity from the Tamor Corridor Highway up to the Tiptala border transit point with Tibet, making it easier for travelers to reach this enchanting location.
Phaktanglung, Nepal’s third-largest rural municipality, boasts other breathtaking attractions, including Yangma, Nupchu Pokhari, and the renowned Kanchenjunga Base Camp. For the local community in Olangchungola, Singjema Lake holds deep spiritual significance; many believe that worshipping at the lake can fulfill one’s wishes. The area is steeped in legends, including tales of a Tibetan man who found prosperity after encountering cow dung by the lake, and a mysterious sheep that vanished into its waters.
Visitors often engage in spiritual practices by offering various items to the lake’s legendary deity. The ideal trekking season to Singjema Lake spans from April to September, during which travelers can camp alongside sheepherders in the picturesque landscape.
In recent times, the lake’s allure has drawn an increasing number of filmmakers and documentary crews. However, filming in the area requires permission from the Kanchanjungha Area Conservation Management Council, especially for drone usage.
The local government and conservation council are tasked with the stewardship and management of Singjema Lake, emphasizing the need for improved tourism infrastructure and facilities to enhance local tourism.
With its rich cultural heritage, historic villages, and monasteries surrounding the lake, Singjema is poised to become a prominent destination for both adventure seekers and spiritual travelers alike.
