Solar Power Backup Introduced at Khayarkandra Community Homestays to Promote Eco-Tourism

The community homestays of Khayarkandra in Shuklaphanta Municipality-3 have recently been equipped with solar power backup systems in a major step toward promoting eco-friendly tourism and improving the livelihoods of local communities.

The solar energy facility has been introduced to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply at the homestays, enhancing service quality for both domestic and international visitors traveling to the area near Shuklaphanta National Park.

Eight Homestays Benefit From Solar Energy Support

The solar backup system has been installed in eight community homestays operating in the area with the joint support of Shuklaphanta Municipality, the Connect Project, and Himali Prakriti.

According to officials involved in the project, the initiative aims to strengthen sustainable tourism infrastructure while encouraging the use of renewable energy in rural tourism destinations.

A total investment of approximately NPR 759,000 was made for the installation of the solar backup systems across all participating households.

Improved Services for Tourists and Homestay Operators

Technical Supervisor at Himali Prakriti, Puran Singh Dhagunna, said the solar energy system would significantly improve operational convenience at the homestays while also supporting environmentally responsible tourism practices.

He stated that the project not only promotes renewable energy use but also contributes to increasing income opportunities for local families engaged in community tourism.

“Importantly, this initiative supports the concept of eco-friendly rural tourism while improving the quality of hospitality services,” he said.

Homestay Operators Welcome Reliable Power Supply

Local homestay operators have expressed satisfaction with the new facility, saying it has helped solve long-standing electricity challenges.

Homestay operator Khusiram Chaudhary said visitors previously faced inconvenience during power cuts, which affected overall guest experience.

“With the solar backup system in place, we can now provide uninterrupted electricity for lighting, fans, mobile charging, and other essential services throughout the day,” he said.

Another operator, Tikuram Dagaura, stated that the reliability of services has improved considerably after the installation of the solar-powered backup system.

Supporting Sustainable Tourism and Environmental Protection

Deputy Mayor of Shuklaphanta Municipality, Kalpana Panta, emphasized that the use of solar energy would contribute not only to better tourism services but also to environmental conservation efforts.

She noted that the initiative aligns with the broader concept of sustainable tourism by reducing carbon emissions and encouraging clean energy use in rural communities.

“Such initiatives are beneficial for advancing environmentally sustainable tourism while supporting local economic development,” she said.

Unique Blend of Nature, Culture, and Community Tourism

The Khayarkandra homestays, located near the internationally recognized Shuklaphanta National Park, have become increasingly popular among visitors seeking authentic rural tourism experiences.

Tourists visiting the homestays are offered traditional Tharu cuisine along with cultural performances featuring indigenous dances and folk songs. The area’s combination of natural beauty, wildlife attractions, local culture, and community-based hospitality has made it an emerging destination for both domestic and foreign tourists.

Strengthening Rural Tourism Economy

Local stakeholders believe that improved infrastructure and reliable energy supply will help further strengthen tourism activities in the region.

The solar energy initiative is also expected to encourage longer tourist stays, improve visitor satisfaction, and generate additional income for rural households involved in community homestay operations.

Officials say the project serves as a model for integrating renewable energy with community-based tourism development in Nepal’s rural destinations.
