Sri Lanka Introduces Visa-Free Entry for 35 Countries, Including Nepal, Starting October 1, 2024

In a landmark move to boost tourism and international relations, the Sri Lankan government has announced a new visa-free entry policy for citizens of 35 countries, including Nepal. This policy will take effect on October 1, 2024, and aims to simplify travel and enhance tourism opportunities.

Sri Lanka’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, M.U.M. Ali Sabry, revealed the policy change on his X account, describing it as the first step towards a broader visa-free regime. The announcement was met with appreciation from Nepal’s Foreign Secretary, Sewa Lamsal, who thanked the Sri Lankan Foreign Minister for including Nepal in the initiative.

The visa-free policy, which will initially be trialed for six months, was confirmed during a recent Cabinet meeting. The decision is expected to significantly increase tourism and foster stronger economic and cultural ties between Sri Lanka and the participating countries.

The list of eligible countries for visa-free entry includes major global destinations such as the United Kingdom, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, Japan, China, India, Russia, and the United States, among others. This comprehensive list reflects Sri Lanka’s commitment to enhancing its global tourism appeal and facilitating easier travel for international visitors.

The new policy is anticipated to attract more tourists to Sri Lanka, offering a boost to the country’s tourism sector and contributing to its economic growth.
