The Snow Leopard Conservation Awareness Program has recently concluded with great success at Tsarang CAMC (Conservation Area Management Committee) in Loghekar Rural Municipality, Upper Mustang. This event, aiming to raise awareness about snow leopard preservation, was organized by the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) and focused on promoting harmony between local communities and wildlife in the Himalayan region.
The program highlighted the importance of protecting the elusive snow leopard, a species listed as vulnerable, and showcased ACAP’s ongoing initiatives for wildlife conservation across the region. The event addressed key topics such as snow leopards’ role in the ecosystem, the impact of climate change on their habitat, and strategies to mitigate human-wildlife conflicts.
Special emphasis was placed on understanding snow leopard behavioral patterns to reduce risks associated with livestock predation, a primary concern for local herders. ACAP has been actively working with local communities to foster sustainable and inclusive conservation practices in Upper Mustang.
This awareness program is part of a broader initiative to build strong conservation values among residents, ensuring long-term survival for the snow leopard population in harmony with the human communities in the region. Organizers expressed optimism that with continued awareness, Upper Mustang can serve as a model for conservation efforts in other high-altitude areas, balancing the needs of wildlife and local livelihoods.
