Sudurpaschim Province Chief Minister Khagaraj Bhatta has called for a stronger and more coordinated effort to develop and promote the province’s religious and tourism destinations, saying the region has substantial potential to attract visitors but requires greater attention to infrastructure, promotion and long-term planning. Speaking at a discussion on the province’s upcoming budget with the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), Sudurpaschim, and tourism entrepreneurs, Bhatta said tourism should be treated as an important area of provincial development, with investment directed toward destinations capable of generating wider economic opportunities for local communities and businesses.
Rich Tourism Potential Needs To Be Turned Into Real Opportunities
Bhatta said Sudurpaschim possesses a diverse combination of religious, cultural and natural attractions that could significantly strengthen the province’s tourism sector if they are developed and promoted effectively. While the province has destinations capable of attracting tourists, he stressed that their potential cannot be fully realized without better infrastructure, stronger destination promotion and a more systematic approach to tourism development. He called for the government to move beyond simply identifying tourism sites and focus on creating the conditions that encourage visitors to travel to and spend more time in the province.

He said greater attention should be given to making tourism destinations more accessible, better managed and more visible to potential visitors. Effective publicity and promotion, alongside improvements in tourism-related infrastructure, would be necessary to introduce Sudurpaschim’s attractions to a wider audience and strengthen the province’s position as a tourism destination. According to Bhatta, coordinated efforts in these areas could help transform the province’s existing tourism resources into sustainable economic opportunities while also supporting businesses operating in the sector.
Religious Tourism Set For Greater Priority
The chief minister said the provincial government will place religious tourism among its priorities, recognizing the importance of the province’s religious destinations in attracting visitors and supporting tourism-related economic activity. He said investment should focus on improving tourism infrastructure while also strengthening promotion and publicity so that important religious destinations can receive greater attention from tourists and pilgrims.
Bhatta emphasized that religious tourism should be developed alongside the province’s cultural and natural attractions rather than treated as an isolated sector. A stronger combination of religious, cultural and nature-based tourism, he said, could provide visitors with a broader range of experiences while creating opportunities for communities located around major destinations. Such an approach would also help ensure that tourism development contributes to the long term and sustainable growth of the province rather than remaining limited to individual destinations or seasonal visitor flows.

Chief Minister Pushes For One Integrated Tourism Plan
Bhatta also highlighted the need to change the way tourism-related budgets and development projects are planned across the three levels of government. He argued that the federal, provincial and local governments should avoid fragmented projects developed independently and instead bring available resources together to prepare a coordinated development framework for the province’s tourism sector.
He said scattered investment can limit the overall impact of government spending, particularly when different levels of government develop small projects without a common long-term objective. By integrating available budgets and coordinating development priorities, the government could prepare a more effective tourism-development plan and direct resources toward projects capable of producing broader and lasting results. He stressed that a unified approach would be important for developing destinations systematically and ensuring that infrastructure, promotion and other tourism-related investments support one another.
Public-Private Partnership Seen As Key To Tourism Growth
The chief minister further stressed that the systematic development of Sudurpaschim’s tourism destinations cannot be achieved by the government alone. He called for stronger cooperation among the federal, provincial and local governments and the private sector, saying tourism entrepreneurs have an important role in turning government investment and destination potential into actual tourism services and business opportunities.
During the discussion, tourism entrepreneurs also urged the provincial government to give tourism a stronger position in the upcoming budget. They drew attention to the need for better tourism infrastructure, wider promotional campaigns and business-friendly policies that can encourage private-sector participation and make it easier for tourism businesses to operate and expand. Their recommendations placed particular emphasis on creating an environment in which government investment and private-sector initiative can work together to strengthen Sudurpaschim’s tourism industry.

Upcoming Budget Could Shape Sudurpaschim’s Tourism Direction
The discussion has placed tourism development firmly on the agenda as the province prepares its upcoming budget, with the focus extending beyond individual destinations to the broader question of how Sudurpaschim can build a more coordinated tourism sector. The emphasis on religious tourism, infrastructure, promotion, integrated budgeting and cooperation with tourism businesses indicates a push toward a more organized development model rather than isolated destination-based projects.
For a province with extensive religious heritage, cultural diversity and natural attractions, the effectiveness of future investment will depend on how successfully these resources are connected with infrastructure, promotion and private-sector participation. The discussions led by Chief Minister Bhatta have therefore highlighted the need for a clear and coordinated approach capable of strengthening Sudurpaschim’s tourism appeal while ensuring that the benefits of tourism development reach local communities and businesses across the province.
