Sunakhari Homestay: Madhesh’s First Community Tourism Village

As the first community-run homestay in Nepal’s Madhesh Province, Sunakhari Community Homestay is located in the peaceful village of Subarnapur, which is part of Thori Rural Municipality-5 of Parsa District. This initiative, which was started in 2016 (2073 BS), consists of 15 households that provide tourists with a genuine look into rural Nepali life, enhanced by natural beauty and cultural immersion.

The homestay is strategically situated next to the Parsa National Forest Buffer Zone, about 34 kilometers from Birgunj Metropolitan City. In order to have a well-rounded vacation, visitors can visit neighboring sites like the Sunahari Forest, the Pranami Temple, the Martyrs Memorial, and the revered monastery Baghmorcha Mai.

Notwithstanding its potential, the homestay has trouble drawing tourists, mostly as a result of poor branding and publicity campaigns. Chairperson Shambhu Ram Poudel underlined the necessity of improved marketing techniques to highlight the homestay’s features, such as its organic food that is produced locally and its cultural events.

The Cottage and Small Industry Office in Parsa has responded by launching awareness campaigns to give homestay operators marketing and account management expertise. Chief Dhannanjay Kumar Singh emphasized how crucial it is to use contemporary information technology to expand the homestay’s audience.

In addition to offering financial support to the neighborhood, the homestay is essential for maintaining cultural heritage and encouraging eco-friendly travel methods. To get a true taste of the region’s culinary traditions, visitors are encouraged to take part in traditional Tamang cultural events and enjoy dishes made from locally grown maize and chicken curry.

Sunakhari Community Homestay is an example of how grassroots efforts can promote sustainable development and cultural preservation as Nepal’s community-based tourism industry grows.
