TAAN and Korea’s KATA Sign MoU to Strengthen Bilateral Tourism Cooperation

The Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) and the Korea Association of Travel Agents (KATA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance bilateral tourism promotion and institutional cooperation between Nepal and the Republic of Korea. The agreement was formalized on December 15, 2025, reflecting a shared commitment to deepening tourism ties and fostering people-to-people connections between the two countries.

The MoU was signed by Mr. Sagar Pandey, President of TAAN, and Mr. Kim Beomje, Vice President of KATA, in the presence of His Excellency Park Tae-Young, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Nepal. The presence of the Korean Ambassador highlighted the diplomatic and strategic significance of tourism cooperation as a bridge for strengthening bilateral relations.

High-Level Participation Underscores Strategic Importance

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by senior representatives from both organizations and the wider tourism fraternity. Among the notable attendees were Mr. Bae Young Chang, General Secretary of KATA, and Mr. Cha Seung Won, Chairperson of the Korea Association of Nepal.

The event was also graced by office bearers and Executive Committee members of TAAN, including General Secretary Mr. Sonam G. Sherpa, Joint Treasurer Mr. Lakpa T. Sherpa, Executive Committee Members Mr. Raju Gurung, Mr. Ramesh Lamsal, Mr. Nakul Devkota, and Mr. Rajendra Amgain, as well as TAAN CEO Mr. Ram Chandra Sedai.

The strong representation from both sides reflected the growing importance of structured cooperation between private-sector tourism organizations in promoting sustainable and mutually beneficial tourism growth.

Promoting Nepal as a Preferred Destination for Korean Tourists

Under the MoU, TAAN will work closely with KATA and Korean travel agencies to promote Nepal’s trekking routes, adventure tourism products, cultural heritage, and natural attractions in the Korean market. The collaboration aims to increase the flow of Korean tourists to Nepal by jointly developing promotional strategies, market outreach programs, and destination awareness campaigns.

A key focus of TAAN’s commitment is enhancing the safety and confidence of Korean tourists visiting Nepal. This includes the dissemination of accurate travel information, safety awareness programs, capacity-building and safety training for trekking agencies, and coordination for prompt search and rescue operations when required. Such measures are expected to strengthen Nepal’s reputation as a safe and responsible trekking destination.

Encouraging Two-Way Tourism Flows

Beyond promoting inbound tourism, the MoU also emphasizes balanced, two-way tourism exchange. TAAN has committed to working with KATA to support initiatives that encourage Nepali travelers to visit Korea, thereby fostering cultural exchange and expanding tourism opportunities for both markets.

Similarly, KATA will collaborate with TAAN to organize joint events, promotional campaigns, and marketing activities aimed at attracting more Korean tourists to Nepal. These initiatives are expected to leverage KATA’s strong network of Korean travel agencies and industry stakeholders.

Cooperation on Safety, Technology, and Logistics

KATA has also pledged to support TAAN through the sharing of information, technology, and logistical assistance, particularly in areas related to tourist safety. This cooperation is expected to contribute to improved risk management, communication systems, and coordination mechanisms for Korean trekkers and other visitors in Nepal.

By combining Nepal’s on-ground operational expertise with Korea’s technological and organizational strengths, the partnership aims to raise overall service standards and enhance visitor satisfaction.

Strengthening Institutional and People-to-People Ties

Analytically, the MoU represents a strategic alignment between two influential tourism associations in Asia. Korea is considered an important and growing source market for Nepal’s tourism, especially for trekking and adventure travel. Institutional collaboration of this nature is expected to translate diplomatic goodwill into tangible tourism outcomes.

The agreement also reinforces tourism’s role as a tool for strengthening friendship and people-to-people relations between Nepal and Korea. Through sustained cooperation, both TAAN and KATA aim to build long-term partnerships that extend beyond marketing to include safety, sustainability, and service excellence.

With the MoU now in place, stakeholders from both countries anticipate the rollout of joint programs and initiatives in the coming months. If implemented effectively, the partnership is expected to contribute to increased tourist arrivals, improved safety standards, and deeper collaboration between the Nepalese and Korean tourism industries, further strengthening the tourism relationship between the two nations.
