TAAN Hosts Meeting with Japanese Embassy Delegates to Discuss Trekking Tourism and Safety Measures

On December 17, 2024, the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) hosted a crucial meeting with delegates from the Japanese Embassy, led by Takahiro Tamura, Charge d’Affaires (CDA), and accompanied by Sato San and Ramhari Pandey. The meeting was held at the TAAN Secretariat and focused on enhancing collaboration to promote trekking and mountain tourism in Nepal, with particular attention to the safety and security of Japanese trekkers in the Nepalese Himalayas.

TAAN President Mr. Sagar Pandey extended a warm welcome to the guests and emphasized key challenges related to the safety of trekkers in the mountains. He highlighted several initiatives undertaken by TAAN to address these issues, including the implementation of the Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS), as well as training programs on mountain safety, trail navigation, first aid, rescue operations, and crisis management during natural disasters.

The meeting was attended by several key members of TAAN, including Senior Vice President Karma Sherpa, General Secretary Sonam G. Sherpa, Treasurer Gautam R. Wagle, Joint Treasurer Lakpa Temba Sherpa, and Executive Committee Members Ambir B. Gurung, Phurpu Chhiring Lhomi, and Hom B. Bishwokarma, along with CEO Ram Chandra Sedai.

The Japanese delegation expressed keen interest in collaborating with TAAN on matters related to trekkers’ safety. Their focus included the effective implementation of TIMS, making trekking guides and supporters mandatory, as well as further training initiatives to ensure the well-being of trekkers in Nepal’s mountainous regions.
